Linking Study Room to Main System

Posted by: KingKong on 10 August 2012

If I have a UnitiQute connected via ethernet cable to the network, would it be able

to "grab" the iTunes Library in my iMac in my study room? My library is in Apple Lossless

at this moment. I think it works wireless but I prefer a more reliable wired network

system. And how would the sound compare to a CDX? Thanks.

I am thinking of getting the UnitiQute, but don't want to get too

complicated as I am not computer savy. Any help appreciated.

Dont think naim does apple lossless.

Even if it does you need a upnp server running in your mac, people have mixed results here i will let you use the search function for that.

Regards wirelss vs wired. Yes wired is more robust, however in theory they both do the same thing, i.e. if its all working for you on wireless then it will wired.

I thought Naim does Apple Lossless. So confusing indeed when computer

meets audio. Probably just me. Thanks for the info.

Hi KingKong,

The UnitiCute will definately handle ALAC.

The question is probably whether your iTunes/MacBook is already "delivering" music to another streaming system in your set up ? Is it ? If so, I am not sure whether iTunes is capable of simultaniously (ie. Literally at the same moment) serve music to 2 systems at the same time. I know that for example the UnitiServe can handle 6 different streaming set ups simultaniously. Your question intruges me, try to sort out for you .

Hi the Big Black Beast ;-)

To adress Iver comment, it's more the way itunes lib is shared on you network that will make this possible (or not). I'm personally sharing my iTunes Lib (stored on my Nas without having the specific Itunes Nas feature activated, so just accessing the Folder Dedicated to the Itunes lib/album) to several steaming box (most Logitech : Sb3, Squeezeboom...) without any problem at all.

Si it's technically possible.

Cheers

So I think the UQ can serve my purpose. I don't need the

iMac to be sending Pink Floyd to the UQ in the main rig

while my wife plays Lady Gaga in the study room. I don't

share my iTunes library with anyone at this time. So a

simple ethernet cable to the UQ should be enough to

grab music from my iMac in the study.

Thanks

No ... you will need to install MinimServer or Playback on your iMac or use an optical S/PDIF cable. The UQ doesn't understand DAAP (or Airpley), which is what the iMac/iTunes uses for sharing music. It can play the ALAC files (as long as it is a newer UQ), but it will do so using UPnP (installing the free MinimServer or the low cost Playback UPnP server will add UPnP to your Apple).

It is never as easy as you think it should be.

You'll also needs some way to select which music you play such as nStream on your iPad.

You can use the UQ front panel, but it is a very basic interface.

A Sonos will just work, but a UQ needs a bit of extra effort.

So installing the MinimServer or Playback should work.

It will be the newer UQ as I have not purchased it yet.

Wanted to get all the facts before delivery. Thanks.

Yes

You should see you iMac under UPnP (strangely called PC on the UQ remote, but UPnP on the UQ display), select it and a wait a short while and it should list your artists, click on an artist will you give the albums you have by them, and clicking again will list the album tracks and click again will play the selected track.

The nStream interface is much nicer if you have an iPad/iPhone.

I can steal the use of my son's iPad. But I have to send him

to bed early so I can start my listening session. Thanks again.
