Farewell then, Sid

Sid Waddell, "the Voice of Darts", has gone to that great Lakeside Centre, Frimley Green in the sky aged just 72:

An erudite chap and a great commentator, he was responsible (in 1984, IIRC) for the single greatest bit of sports commentary of all time when Eric "The Crafty Cockney" Bristow won his umpteenth world title.

Cambridge-educated waddell said upon Bristow's victory: "At the age of thirty-three, Alexander the Great of Macedon wept salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer. Eric Bristow is 27."

Magnificent. How's that for bathos (or, to look at it another way, hyperbole).

Really sad. He was the voice of darts, and great wit at that.

Just read his wikipedia page, the quotes are such gems.

Sid, you will be missed.
