Uitiserve as a player

Posted by: maze on 13 August 2012

Is it possible to eject a cd when using the us as a player via the nserve app or do you have to let the whole cd play out? I know you can insert a pin to the front of the us to eject but is there a way to eject remotely?

Not that I know of.

On another note: I try not to use my serve for playing as it sounds like a jet airplane is taking off the entire time the cd plays.  I'm sure there is something wrong with my unit.

mine doesn't sound too bad as a player. Now most of my cd's are on the hard drive I thought I would try it as a player but cannot see how to eject a cd via the nserve app. At the moment I have to move to the last track and let it play out and then it ejects, so if anyone can say how to eject with the app it would be appreciated.

Develyn I suspect something may not be right with your us.

If you place  your finger briefly on the Naim logo it will eject the disc. Don't hold it too long or it will shut down,

Ok thanks Graham I will give it a shot.

Hi Develyn

Mine does that as well on some CDs. Also, when ripping, it really vibrates. I'm told that some CDs are not manufactured to the best quality, and can play up on some machines.

Do you, or does anyone else leave their Unitiserve switched on permanently? I do, and it feels really warm at the moment.

I leave mine on all the time and yes it gets warm, which surprises me. Its not quite to class a amp hot but still unreasonably warm to touch for which is nothing more than ac omputer, but then my lap top gets warm too.

I have not seen the userve, but I suppose it works like the servers, meaning that it has a fan but it is only activated  when the unit cannot use the case for passive quiet cooling. In a computer I am told if the cpu does not have a fan to cool it it will overheat and die very soon.

I had that problem... then I moved away from Colnbrook near Heathrow Airport up to Chester... and it stopped.

Nice one Roger!

Claus I don't recall the unitiserve having a internal fan, i am happy to stand corrected if this is so.

David, mine gets rather warm to the touch, and yes I keep it on all the time.

Guys

I'm looking at possibly going to a US...

Curious to know how good the CD playback is when compared to a transport such as the CD5XS?

Anyone done the comparision?

The UnitiServe is passively cooled and has no fan ... the main CPU and accompanying chipsets are all heatsinked to the chassis and use the chassis to dissipate their heat.

Cheers

James, I have compared uServe > Naim DAC  to CD5XS > Naim DAC, and perceive very little if any difference.  If anything I prefer the uServe "sound."  Indeed I am very likely going to sell my CD5XS (see my thread about this, which devolved into a cd vs. streaming debate) as it's not used these days.

Cheers Bart.

Thanks Bart.

Will try and get to do the comparison myself sometime soon...

Currently deciding if I get my HC modded to DR! The jury is still out...

James when I first got my unitiserve I was informed that as a player it was not up to much in the sound quality dept, I have to say I think it is not too bad, maybe not up to a top notch cd player but respectable all the same.
