Leaving Naim kit powered on!
Posted by: AntonD on 15 August 2012
Hi
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am new to Naim. I leave both my supernait and nd5xs powered on. Should I select a specific input on the nait when not in use?
Any other advice regarding this subject is most welcome.
Cheers, Anton
I don't select any specific input and keep powered on 24hrs a day. You could press the mute button if you want.
Enjoy
Steve
Hi Anton,
It's the conventional wisdom that Naim kit be left on, there are a couple of reasons, firstly, the system sounds much better when all warmed up, the first 30 minutes after being switch back on can sound particularly bad. Secondly, the stress on the electronic components from frequently switching on and off is far greater than just occasionally. My recommendation is switch you equipment off when going away for more than a couple days or so.
With respect to your other question, I don't believe it matters which input is left selected, would welcome other comments on this though.
Kind regards
Jo
leave the pre on mute, in case evil little children decide to hit play on the Cd, when you left a disc in....... <grin>
Apparently global warming is occurring much faster in the Arctic than elsewhere - yet - and the projections were only twelve months ago that the summer ice would entirely disappear annually by the end of the 21st Century.
It seems that things are warming much faster than the most pessimistic projections till now. The summer ice is likely to disappear by the end of the current decade.
Turn the kit off. The reported quality during the first hour or so is far less significant than helping to ruin the world for ourselves, let alone the next generation.
If Naim kit is so frail that it would breaak down if the power switch is used daily, then I'd call it unfit for purpose, though I have never heard of any failure due to using this control.

I don't post much anymore although I still read every day. This debate has been going on for a long time. I have: 202/200/Nait 5i/CD5/Nap140. My choice has been to turn them off after use. I have been doing this for years with no ill effect. My components sounded great out of the box and always sound great right after turn on.
I have never noticed the "settling in" effect that is so often mentioned in many posts. I may be the lone voice in the forest on this but that has been my personal experience. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that haven't had to do the multitude of tweaks you read about in this forum to get enjoyable musicality from my components.
Hi AntonD.
The higher you move up the Naim range the more the equipment is sensitive to being turned off. In your case trial and error springs to mind, personally I never turn my system off. To GF I will go and listen to some chant now ! ATB Peter
Thanks to all for your comments. Noted and Much appreciated. I will admit I generally switch electrical items off when not in use. I think I will try this with my naim items and see how it goes
Again, many thanks
Anton
Maze, do you actually have any evidence for these assertions (not the ones about George)?
If so, please share with us all so we may be enlightened like you.
My kit tends to sound thin but not unmisical after a power down. It takes 1-2 days to get back to "normal" but it doesn't sound at all bad in the process. Had a power cut tonight as it happens. Bugger! High winds. I'll power it back up tomorrow weather permitting.

Dear mfrancis,
Two of us ignoring the nonsense of the received wisdom that turning off makes a significant difference to quality of reproduction from Naim kit! I am sure there are many more out there who are more shy about admitting this apparent heresy, and showing they have common sense and some care for the future inhabitants of the planet!
Waste is waste is waste, and is a terrible thing when done as a routine.

Dear maze,
Come on. I am not a muppet! If you think of he cost of a bulb and the cost of the electricity it would use if left permanently on, then your statement is soon to be seen as absurd!

I wonder: Is Maze a troll.
Dear MM,
It might be kinder to call him the Devil's Advocate!
ATB from George
George muppet was meant more as a term of endearment and not meant personal,
And that is how I took it.
Rarely does something like that upset me. Getting older is a great salve against worrying what people say directly to one's face!
What can be far more serious is what is said behind one's back so that one cannot answer for one's self against it!

PS: If you must leave the kit on consider the plan of leaving the pre-amp and CD player powered and turn off the power amp[s] as these are far worse in quiescent mode.
There's a theory that constant power up means longer life. Just like a light bulb, it only goes when you turn it on. I leave my kit on all the time unless I'm planning not to listen for several days or going away. I can balance any concern over global warming by the fact that I high energy saving bulbs throughout, I shower far more often than bath, I might only flush the chain when Ive had a poo, I'll put just enough water in the kettle as required, hair dryers, tumble dryers, hair straighteners are banned, the washing machine only goes on when it's absolutely necessary, so in turn I will leave whatever cherished equipment on as much as I like and the hell to climate change!
You don't believe in GW/CC - fair enough. But saying you don't believe something is not a statement of fact, it is an opinion or assertion.
Your post reads like a sulky teenager disagreeing with his parents, and is riddled with nonsensical conspiracy theories and non-sequiturs.
First of all, paying tax is an obligation under the law - it has nothing to do with being gullible. And CC was not "invented" by politicians to tax anyone - it came from the scientific community and was picked up by the environmental movement. If politicians respond to it, it is because they feel there may be political capital to be made. If there are votes in fighting CC, then they'll pick that ball up and run with it. If there are votes in being skeptical about CC, then most of them wll run with that ball as well. It's realpolitik.
Secondly I would like you to point me to some evidence - peer-reviewed scientific papers, perhaps - which prove that CC is not happening.
Thirdly, you say "the global warming lobby was exposed for telling fibs and exaggerating" - when did this happen, what lies were told, and who exposed them? Do tell.
Fourthly, you seem to have little - if any - grasp of climate science. Local weather anomalies (ie the summer here in Blighty) neither prove nor disprove climate change theory, which is concerned with global or macroclimatic patterns and change over the medium to long term, not wet a June 2012 in Bognor.
Personally, and for the record, I started off as agnostic on climate change, but as time has gone on, the evidence seems to be pointing towards the fact that a)it exists and b) it is man-made and I am moving towards the scientific consensus.
I am also rather suspicious of the vehemence with which climate change skeptics (I won't call them deniers) put forward their points, and the amount of time, money and effort some of them seem to spend doing it. I wonder why they get so worked up.
Plus, most of them (eg in this country, James Delingpole, Martin Durkin or Toby Young) seem to be utter ****s.
yep, my pocket means more to me than any conscience of climate change. I'm pretty sure man will either destroy himself of another meteor impact will end life as we know it before the effects of everyone leaving their kit on does. However Maze, I wouldn't go as far as turning a shower off whilst I was in it, for 3 reasons, firstly, that would be the same as getting into an empty bath, secondly, turning my none electric shower off would mean that it would be f-in freezing when I turned it back on, combi-boiler and thirdly, it would probably burn more gas in the long run.

"my pocket means more to me than any conscience of climate change".....there in lies the problem.
Sorry Ray, unfortunately this is the undeniable problem and we are all guilty of this because its to difficult not to be. It requires to much effort to have a conscience.
Thats a criticism of human nature not you personally.
Maze....lol.
Jason, also, my earlier thread did mention some things I do/have to save energy. I even have a car that cuts out when stopped!!!
