Leaving Naim kit powered on!

Posted by: AntonD on 15 August 2012

Hi

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am new to Naim. I leave both my supernait and nd5xs powered on. Should I select a specific input on the nait when not in use?

Any other advice regarding this subject is most welcome.

Cheers, Anton

I always leave my kit on but with the exception of the power amp as that takes only a few minutes to warm up.

Maze, I know the "fibs" issue you refer to. I think you will find that there is more to it than what you wish it were.

Thinking is changing Maze, people are more educated today and science is also more accessible to those that have not been educated, the texts and evidence are out there, it just requires reading.

Dont be afraid of it mate, its better to face it now while you are young and clearly full of bravado

............Anton, welcome to the world of Naim and this very insightful forum where everyone exchanges a load of views of almost everything you can think of, forgetting the fact that we all  have one very nice interest in common.  Even my 5yr old asked me what I was laughing at. long live the forum ;-)

Yes, so you did.

No persoal criticisms meant for those who have posted, and posted it seems to me with honesty.

I said that waste is waste. We can none of of us undo what we have done in the past in terms of it, but we can look forward, and try to waste less.

Three years ago i used to run a car, and sold it to a friend ...

I make rare journeys on rail now and fill in the commute and others shorter runs on a cycle. My gas and electricity combined amounts to less than a £1 each day over the last two years, Winter and summer, and I am hoping that my new flat may even prove more economic and therefore more sustainable.

Flying is a bit of a disaster in terms of keeping energy consumption to the minimum.

Turning off the router, or gramophone when not used is finessing really, but without finnesse we are hardly advanced beyond the Dark Ages ...

Dobre Noc to all  ATB from George

Not got a leg to stand on, have you? Stop the name-calling (you are pretty pathetic at it anyway, so give it up) and tell me who this "bod" at Cambridge Uni was? You can't, because you don't know. You don't have a frigging clue. You have half-heard and barely understood a story from 2010 ("Glaciergate") and mindlessly regurgitated it from The Daily Express. Or perhaps you were conflating it with "Climategate", the UEA "scandal" (that turned out to be nothing of the sort) of the previous year. Perhaps you should get up to speed.

And learn to read. When did I say I believed in any politician? Or are you just really as stupid as your posts imply you are?

PS - the "W" stands for Whyibothertryingtoengagewithbrainlessmoronslikemazeireallydontknowbutitsquitegoodfunisuppose-althoughitsabitlikeshootingfishinabarrelwaytooeasy.

That's why I just abbreviate it to "W", far less unwieldy.

Back to the question - yes leave it on all the time!

It will cost more on your fuel bills - especially those of us running Active.

Global Warming (uh, make that "climate change") is very real--like the war on terror (sorry, I meant "overseas contingency operation") or illegal aliens (of courseI meant to say "undocumented workers".

I blame Al Gore!

Well Anton, I hope you got a satisfactory answer to your inquiry. The power on or off question is always a good one for lively debate. It almost always veers off into kook territory, name calling, derogatory comments, and even a reference to poo!

I wonder how many of the eco-vangelists on here power down their broadband routers  ( not just their computers) when they're not using precious electricity posting on here and telling people to turn their stuff off?

Hmmm.

If you'll pardon the pun...this debate seems to have got rather overheated! Maybe we need some hard facts about just how much power is being 'wasted' by leaving the equipment switched on continuously and then we can debate whether this is worth sacrificing sound quality over. But I have to add that there is far more intentional power wastage in most people's lives and homes that has no positive element to it....perhaps these are the areas to be more concerned with, and concentrate our anti-global warming efforts.

Yes, I leave mine on all the time, including power amp because having spent a ridiculous amount of money I want to hear it at it's best....always.

Waste is always waste - every kWh counts. However, I think that the total energy consumption per person should be the deciding factor. I leave my music equipment on all the time but I try to minimize the box count in order to mitigate the effect. I try to keep my total usage per year below 1000 kWh which before I entered into Naim world was easy. Now I have to say I struggle a bit (latest estimate for this year is 1240 kWh). What comes to the other forms of energy usage I do not have a car (and never have had, I have a license so occasionally I drive though) and I fly only if it is absolutely necessary. Everybody make their own choices but climate is important and the issue will not go away simply by saying that there is no issue or there is not enough supporting evidence. At least those who are having children should be thinking about this (I don't have any but but I still am).

Kevin W, I think you need to get a sense of humour, you are sounding typical of cimate change fascists. I think climate change is real, it's called nature and has been going on since this world came into being. There are as many debates  for and against both sides of this argument that the climate fascists don't like debated.

No I cant remember the bods name in question, but if it is really important to you I will find out as it was well documented at the time.Even the leftish BBC eventually had to report it on the BBC news. That must have croaked them.

Lets not forget just a few years back we were dogmatically told that the ozone was disappearing and now hey suddenly it's repaired itself.

As for the so called politicians running the UK and EU I wouldn't piss on any of them if saw one of them on fire, again nothing more than a glorified free fest for the whole bunch of them.Debate is stangled in this country, we are drip fed dogma. You beleive it if you want.I like debate and am happy to admit when I am wrong, climate change is too one sided at the moment.

So to sum up I do and will leave my kit on.

One last thing Kevin W, I thought W meant W****R, but was too polite to say so.

Thats a criticism of human nature not you personally.

And indeed reflects the world that surrounds us. Want to drastically reduce emissions due to cars? Stop building new cars. Need to address pollution caused by aircraft? Ground them, dismantle them and recycle. Why aren't we doing this and a score of other things to address the "problem"? Because it would cost jobs and hollow out economies. So the climate situation can't be that urgent can it? Right now we're still at the stage of mugging and shaming end consumers. Same as usual. When such cynicism not only steers society but is legislated for one can't help being cynical in kind. There is a huge movement predicated on stating the obvious and blaming me/you/everyone for something  with an unproven cause and effect. It's a religion of empirical observation, adding two and two and believing with such zeal that it must be correct. The same can apply from the other direction - and there is an ocean of data to support either direction.

I set the NDS display to switch off after a few seconds and use the disp function on the pre amp. Along with carefully planning car use, laying most of the garden to lawn and buying locally produced milk and veg, I am doing my bit. But not because it is affecting the climate. Believe that if you want and I will respect it. But don't tell me to.

I always find it amusing to watch "An Inconvenient Truth" and "The Great Global Warming Swindle" back to back... :hehe:

Phil, although you might find the discussion itself amusing there is nothing funny about the subject of the self-destruction of mankind.

Roo good point there, which was what I was saying in a long winded roundabout way. The same stuff was garbled about the ozone layer back in the eighties, now last time I heard the ozone had recovered.

"Turn the kit off."

No. It sounds much better that way.

Next? Blah blah blah blah....

There will always be those who hide their heads in the sand. I only hope that the majority at some point see the light.
