NDS and N-Stream

Posted by: HTM_1968 on 18 August 2012

Hi,

I have a new NDS to replace my nDAC/ND5SX . I'm having an issue with N-Stream V3.0 installed on an iPad. The NDS is connected via a switch to a Virgin Media Superhub and functions perfectly in that it sees my QNAP NAS and Vortexbox (and any other device on my wired network) and plays back without dropouts.

The issue with N-Stream is really irritating. To access the new features I need to have UPnP compatability mode in N-Stream turned on. When I have this enabled, my QNAP NAS does not appear in N-Stream. When I disable the UPnP compatability mode, the QNAP appears. As the QNAP contains the bulk of my FLACs, this is a pain.

EDIT: I am also getting the SERVER not available message for anything N-Stream sees but the NDS is playing from that server the time N-Stream claims it is unavailable......

The NDS sees the QNAP irrespective of the UPnP mode setting in N-Sync so I am making do with the remote and the screen to select files, but it would be nice to be able to use the iPad and the new features such as playlists.......(sigh) OK it would be just nice to change tracks without leaving the comfort of my sofa as I'm too old to read the screen on the NDS from further than 2m away.

FWIW the issue is mirrored on my iPhone with N-Stream, so it is not an iPad problem

Any suggestions or solutions to this issue would be gratefully received, as rebooting the NAS, iPad etc and even power cycling the NDS has not proved effective, which exhausts my PC related problem-solving skill set.....

Thanks in advance

I do not recognise the setting of uPnP  compatability mode in n-Stream, I cannot see this as an option on my iPod.

When you select the UpnP option on "Inputs", using n-Stream do you see the Qnap.

I'm having a similar issue in that if I select the settings button next to where it says UPnP in the bottom RH corner it tells me there are no devices connected even though my ND5 is playing ! This morning when I came to start my Hi Res Beatles marathon to try and resolve my other issue n-stream said no servers and the ND5 said no Network. Nothing had changed or been switched off after I stopped last night. After a few minutes of head scratching the ND5 suddenly found the network and I could start listening again. I spoke to Naim yesterday regarding my dropout issue. They told me there was a new n-stream due in the next couple of weeks. When I think back my dropout issues started round about the time I updated to the latest n-stream. Perhaps if anyone at Naim is reading this they could contribute ?

In the setup options of N-Stream there is a UPnP compatability mode option under the UPnP settings. The only way I can see my NAS drives is to opt not to have queue and playlist support. Granted I don't really use these options yet as they aren't supported by the ND5SX. But they would be nice to have and annoyingly everything works when I defeat these options on the NDS......

Are you wired directly into your router or do you have a switch between the ND5SX and router. The purchase of a cheap switch solved nearly all the other glitches and bugs I had with the ND5SX.

I forgot about the set up. You have to set the compatibility mode to disabled in order to access the queue and playlist functions.

Yep, and when I do so I cannot see either of my NAS drives in N-Stream, which is rather inconvenient when trying to creat a queue or playlist!

P.S. Don't have nStream open on screen when doing this as it won't show on the apps running in the background along the bottom.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried this but sadly there was no joy. I've tried all combinations of rebootings, restartings etc with no result. The really frustrating part of all this is that our UnityQute has never displayed any of the issues with dropouts and not seeing servers that have caused problems with the current NDS and our ND5SX that is now surplus to requirements.

Are you using QNAP's Twonky as your UPnP server?

if yes, are you saying that Twonky can not find the music folders on your NAS?  Or are you saying that there is something wrong with Twonky's folder navigation?

I guess I am not understanding your problem.  To use UPnP, you use nStream to select a UPnP server, and not the NAS itself.  You should be configuring your UPnP server to find the folders on your NAS that contain your music files.

I must be missing something here.  I use a QNAP as well, but use Asset running on a separate PC server for UPnP, and have no issues with nStream 3.0 as a control point, nor with my NDX as a renderer.  And I believe the NDX and NDS use the same streaming board...

PS - nStream 3.0 playlists are stored on the UPnP server, so that's why you can't have playlists without UPnP.  This is explained in your NDS manual.

Why do you need the UPnP Compatibility mode turned on?  Mine isn't and I have access to all the great new playlist features with my NDS... am I missing something?

OK, apologies for not being 100% clear. I have a Vortexbox and a separate NAS. When the options in N-Stream are set up for queues and playlists, I cannot "see" the directory structure (e.g. Music/Photos/Films on either of the NAS drives) in N-Stream. However, I can at the same time access the directory structure from the front panel of the NDS. When I disable the queue and playlist options I "see" everything. My 'Qute is unaffected as is my ND5SX. The problem here is that N-Stream appears not to want to offer the extra functions to me.....

Exactly! I expected the NDS to do for me what it clearly does for you via N-Stream. At present it simply provides the same functionality as my 'Qute or my soon for the chop ND5SX.

Wierd, I had none of these issues with the ND5SX. That simply plugged in, connected to N-Stream and worked out of the box.....as did the 'Qute. And RTFM is not the issue here because I have read TFM.....

....apart from the fact that the NDS simply smokes the other devices sonically.....
