New Mountain Lion OSX wireless connection.

Posted by: Steve J on 21 August 2012

I recently upgraded to the new Mountian Lion OSX mainly to take advantage of the iCloud capabilities. Since downloading I've found my wireless connection intermittently breaks down. It's easily rectified by just opening Network in System Preferences and then closing. It's bizarre as I need do nothing else to establish connection. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

I upgraded five Macs to Mtn Lion.  Now AirPort Setup Utility reports that the two AirPort Extremes and one Express I use are up and down.  Remote.app has become unreliable when used to access my Mini into the DAC.  My older G5 running Leopard will no longer serve iTunes to my wireless AppleTV1.  Not sure if the latter is an iTunes version issue, or related to the network issue.  Remote.app sees both of my iTunes severs, one on Mtn Lion, one on Leopard, but will play neither.  Used to work perfectly.

Of course, one is left to wonder if operator error is involved.  Apple has a good record of patching these kinds of issues; but I think this would induce some folks to go back to the reliability of CD.  I am keeping the CD player for now, if only to keep the music on through these periods of black-out.  For me, the faff is still worth it; but, I would not criticize others for being less forgiving.

Hi Nick,

I've also had a problem of downloading photos from an SD card to Lightroom, although photos download as normal from a CF card. Also the photos from the SD card, when downloaded in Bridge and edited in CS5 still won't download to Lightroom. Wierd. I'm sure Apple will come up with some fix in the near future, especially with the wireless issue.

Did the apple developers and windows developers switch sides? Windows is keeps improving and Mac is keeps getting worse in terms of functionality and reliability. Windows 8 is far superior to the old mountain lion. I guess The passing of Steve Jobs had a larger impact on Apple's ability of combining creativity with common sense all dressed up in a cool looking package. Goodbye Apple and hello Mr. Gates.

Same here. Went to the Apps store today and downloaded an update for Mountain Lion that has just been released but have not had enough test time to see if it has fixed this odd WiFi hiccup.

Hi Geoff,

I couldn't find the update on the Apps store. The only ML update for me was for my printer. Please advise if you can.

Thanks

I was about to go for Mountain Lion on my Mac Book but I think I'll leave it a while longer. As far as the Mac Mini that I use only for streaming is concerned I won't change that from Snow Leopard unless there is a benefit to my music.

It looks like this is a problem being experienced by a lot of people going by the Apple support website. It doesn't look like ther is a stable work around until Apple fixes it yet.

you could try this http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/02...connection-problems/

Some people are saying that updating their router firmware does the trick.

An article on the update (Google search) advised:

Click on 'Software Updates' on the 'APPLE" menu which will link to the Apps Store and display that there is an update for Moutain Lion.

That worked for me and I just had to click the displayed 'Download' button. I assume it only displays on a MAC which has Mountain Lion installed.

Bad News is it doesn't seemed to have fixed the WiFi niggle. It is just as you say a need occasionally to go to network preferences and reassert your choice of WiFi and then it works as normal. Not a disaster just a bit anoying.

BTW especially for folk like Spartacus who are wondering about Mountain Lion.

I did a search on how to revert to Lion and  all the info I found said it would be difficult unless you were prepared to erase and use a Lion backup to restore from. Even then there were discussion about 'Mail' for example which is reconfigured by Mountain Lion not reverting cleanly.

In other words once you have installed Mountain Lion your pretty much stuck with it

I have not gone to Mountain Lion yet ... I'm not really an earlier adopter, but before jumping on a new cat I use Carbon Copy Clone to make a copy of current Mac to a firewire disk then if things break, I can boot from firewire disc and restore the clone to get back to where I once belonged.

Sorry it doesn't help if you've made the jump, but may aid some folk contemplating it.

Ya, I'm not normally an early adopter, but after reading this thread I decided to try it. I backed up my MacBook with SuperDuper in order to have a bootable clone to restore from.

So far, some interesting features, and no problems with wi-fi. I did have problems getting Mountain Lion to install, it hesitated then said my hard drive was damaged. It would just freeze on start-up so I had to do a safe boot. I couldn't find Mtn. Lion on my drive, then found the App Store wouldn't let me re-download it without signing in again with a different location with my i.d. then on and on. I finally re-downloaded it and got it to work. Only took about 4 hours of debugging.

+1 on that. I don't adopt early and I always clone the machine first. I have an external hard drive full of utilities like Carbon Copy Cloner and then a set of partitions for cloning systems - My own, my Grandson's and a friend's. At the moment I can go back to Snow Leopard on all of them.

@The Hawk, a tip for the future is to download then make a copy of the file called "InstallESD" if I remember correctly. You can the put this on a disk or USB stick and use it for installs on other machines or re-installs without downloading again, and hopefully avoid the App store etc.

Cheers Guy. The problem is a frustrating one but a lesson for the future.

Thanks spartacus. I think I saw this file when using disk utility. The download (original) stopped three times and I had to keep 'retrying'. I must say, I am not a fan of the app store, especially for something as important as this. Whenever I can, I'll buy an app directly from the developer. I can't stand the app store. It can really be 'buggy' at times.

I read about people finding the AppStore buggy but fortunately I've never experienced this. I must be one of the lucky one, hopefully not a case of famous last words. I've just posted this from the forum App on my iPhone for the 1st time. Not sure I like it though.

The App Store can be a pain. When I went for the re-download yesterday, it kept asking me to sign in again with the Apple i.d. I purchased Mountain Lion with. Which is the very same i.d. I was signed in with. Very frustrating.

Interesting Hawk... Do you sign out from the App store? I must admit I have never signed out on MacBook Pro, iPhone or iPad. I just stay signed in and secure at the device level.

Posted on: 28 August 2012 by The Hawk

I've had to sign out, then sign in again with my Apple i.d. When I optimized my Mac for music playback through my dac, I had Spotlight disconnected, and found that as a result the app store wouldn't work properly. At the end of the day, I would just rather order my software from the actual developer. Finally, I guess I am old school and would rather own OSX Mountain Lion on a disc produced by Apple.

App store is very "green", it saves a significant amount in the cost of manufacture, distribution and mail costs. Each stage accruing a profit element  so a £19 App store item becomes a £60 or more item if bought from a bricks and mortar store

For the OSes stop the install after the down load, locate the file that has been downloaded (most likely in the Application folder), move it to another folder eg Download folder and then restart the install from the new location. This way the installation file will not be deleted at the end of the install process. It can then be copied to other machines you own without having to download it again.

Thanks Derek. I understand the 'green' concept of the store. I just don't like a lot of the aspects of the store. It can be very buggy. There is really weird pricing going on. Sometimes the developer charges less than the App Store. I had to buy an app like Fidelia a second time, outside of the App Store, to upgrade it to the more comprehensive version. There are a lot of bugs with the store, and a Google search shows that many people have had problems with the store, quite atypical for an Apple product.

Mountain Lion was the weirdest install ever. The download took forever (I have ultra high speed internet). It kept stopping, and I had to keep 'retrying'. The file did not show on my hard drive, anywhere. It was definitely not in the applications folder. My MacBook wouldn't do a conventional restart after the so called installation. It would just freeze. At some point I got the message that my hard drive needed 'repairing'. Which had already been done. I had already repaired permissions too and did a full backup with SuperDuper beforehand. So after a safe boot, I went to the store again, to download Mountain Lion again. Then the store wouldn't let me download with my i.d, it wanted the i.d. I used to purchase it. Which was the same i.d. So four or five hours of hell. Lion was the same situation for me. Sorry, but I'm old school, and when it comes to downloading something as important as the actual operating system, I want it on a DVD that I can just pop into the Superdrive.

I know there are a lot of great minds at Apple. Still, I don't believe Apple will be the same again without Steve Jobs. Windows is getting a lot better and closing the gap.

It took about 20 minutes to download Mountain Lion, it installed on two machines with no problem.

I had identified where the file had been placed and moved it to another folder and then started the install.

Now I have a copy of the install DMG file I can use again.

It's nice when everything goes according to plan. I wish it had been that easy for me.

One of my customers has written new requirements for his data centre. It says solid doors with strong locks and sturdy reinforced walls with no windows .... I thought great no more Microsoft applications.

Ah, yes I've heard about people running into problems with the App store when they disable spotlight.

I've never turned it off. My music is on a NAS so I don't think it indexes it. I have tried a spotlight search for a file I know is only on the NAS and it hasn't found it. I do remember reading somewhere that you can stop it indexing Time Machine backups and external disks.

Strange problems can happen! I've never had any network issues with MacOS for the last 10 years when I started using Mac.

Maybe your problem could be with MacOS Mountain Lion, maybe it is with something else, maybe it could be a coincident that happened after you installed Mountain Lion. There is no way to pin down exactly what has gone wrong, to fix this I suggest the following steps:

o Shutdown and restart your machine

o Shutdown and restart your wireless router

o Reinstall Mountain Lion

o If all of the above-mentioned do not fix your problem. Perhaps that last step is to visit a local Apple Store and see if they can fix your problem. I am sure that Apple will fix it.
