Any experts on Qute update?

Posted by: Lilyliu on 23 August 2012

I recently did the firmware update on my Qute- sounds great!  Then today did the Audivo board swap.  Powered up fine, went to factory settings to reset settings, said success.  Then it went to Analogue, and will do nothing but volume/mute.  Remote now not working.
Any ideas from you very smart people?

Sent my issue to Naim support as well.
Thanks!
Chas

Excellent service today from Naim support.
After turn on of unit, hit aux i and disp on remote at the same time, and it rights itself quite nicely.
Very pleased!

Lilyliu, did you do the firmware upgrade yourself? How do you do that?
Posted on: 24 August 2012 by Lilyliu
Hi, yes I did.
You must use a Windows system, and follow the directions that come with the update kit to a t.  Also you need to buy the proper USB to RS232 adaptor Naim recommends or one like it that uses a FDTI chip.

Then I replaced the Audivo board.  Hit a slight snag there, as you can see from my inquiry.  But with one quick answer from Naim support I was home free.

Thanks Lilyliu! I might just try the upgrade myself!

If I can do it, I would think most anyone could.  Like I said, have the proper tools, the correct RS232 cord, follow the directions closely, and you'll be fine.  Have a T10 torque, the two asked for allen wrenches, and maybe a gin and tonic to steady your nerves.
I'm still not happy I couldn't use my MAC and had to borrow a pc laptop, but the resulting sound is worth it.

How does one get hold of this update kit?

What exactly does it update on the standard Qute?

I can't ... the only device of its ilk in my house that I can't, but there you go  ... buy PC, buy Windows, buy USB to RS232 convertor (go back to shop after buying wrong one), learn how to install things on Windows such as drivers, dismantle system to remove UQ, follow instructions, put it all back together again ,,,, phone Naim support, hit sequence on remote ....

I know Naim folk are incredibly helpful, but ....

Compare with Sonos, ATV, DVD Player, TV, Wii, Mac, iPad ... you have new software, click update, make coffee ... job done.

I know I go on about this, but for the money a UQ costs ... it should be easier.

+1 Guido. What's with having to buy an extra lead to update Naim gear anyway? At the price of the kit I would have thought that Naim could afford to put one of the RS232 to USB leads in the box. They don't cost much (£2.89 on Amazon!) so it would not eat into the profit margin much and especially if it's a must have if you want to keep your kit up to date. I have one of these adapters in the garage but would rather save the money and frustration by NOT buying a Naim streaming product until they sort all this out. I'll stick to my Mac Mini and buy more music.

True, a few challenges, especially for Mac people, but it's not near the crisis that you make it.
I borrowed a pc laptop- surely you can do that.  The download link is in the instructions, takes but a minute to download, and it opens just like the instructions say.  A couple next clicks and it's installed.

True, Naim could furnish the cable in the kit, or do a dealer loan.   I, too, complained of that.  It tells you which cable to buy with the right chip- no worries there.
The hardware upgrade took ten minutes.  They tell you the tools to have, and it all went easy peasy.  If you can't undo five screws then heaven help you.

Yes, I did have to get support to get the remote to work- they could have included that instruction, or maybe that was my particular case, not sure.
So quibble at will, but you're missing out on a much better sounding unit for not much money or effort.

Is that the 24/192 board upgrade you are referring to? My dealer says $400.00 for them to do it. Are you saying you can buy it as a self install - if so how much & from whom?

thx

Yes, that's the kit.  I'm in the US. Price here was $400 for the kit, then extra for dealer or factory install.  When my dealer saw what it was, he said since there wasn't any soldering involved I could do it. And so I did.  And it's so good, I'm going ahead and moving from Kudos C10's to Super 10's.

okay - got it. I am north of the border from you -will pursue the upgrade, & thank you.

Great!  If you have a Qute, you will love this.  You can even do the firmware update first- have a listen. You'll be impressed, and encouraged to pop the top and do the board.  Just follow the directions closely.  And have everything you need to do it before you start.   I bought my Rs232 cable from Frys.com.   I ordered from the British site that the instructions give, but the dumb buggers wouldn't ship to the States.
Good luck and happy upgrading!

I bought the rs232/usb cable and did the 3.13 firmware upgrade. The 24/192 boards are back ordered here where I am - so that will have to wait for another time.

When you bought the 24/192 kit- did your dealer ask for the 24/96 board back? That is what they are telling me over here!

Posted on: 05 September 2012 by Lilyliu
My dealer didn't, although in the Naim kit instructions it says to mail it back to Naim.  Why would anyone want to keep it anyway? I'm not a kit builder. Lol.

well - fall back in case the new one gets 'zapped', you still have what you paid for before? apparently it's credited in the price of the 24/192 board- mmmh, how can you argue with that??
