Nstream for Android / Bada

Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 25 August 2012

Does anyone know the roadmap for porting Nstream to android or Bada? I personally am disgusted by Apples monopolistic and greed ridden approach and will be looking to move away from Apple when my current Apple devices need replacing.

Once Nstream is ported I'll likely be moving my phone/tablet  The Samsung devices look great and provide innovation at better value.

I do wonder if Apple has read my mind and are spiting me as I have started finding iOS very unreliable and flaky and these devices have be come quite fustrating to use.

I am with you on this one, had to buy n iPod for n-Stream the only Apple device in my house I would love to have the n-stream on my new Galaxy S3. The gluing of batteries in place and soldering of memory in order to accelerate obsolescence is disgraceful. Eco-friendly?

I hear you Gerry, perhaps Phil might give some insight on a non Apple port. Would you believe my iPad crashed making this post!!

Just a thought,

Why dont you just clone your Andriod's to work the App or the other way round?

Yeah ... Google are the good guys .... so nice of them to take a picture of my house and stick it on the Internet .... I feel a bit sorry for Samsung though I'm sure they'll survive. These are computer companies and they sue each other as a way of life. The Gatesian empire remain the most anti-competitive company it has ever been my misfortune to have dealt with ... so their decline is something I'll never mourn.

Of course, I wish Apple would not get embroiled in this nonsense, but you can't always get what you want. The iPad remains my favourite item of consumer electronics ... I think it is wonderful thing: even my mother uses one daily.

My preference would be for Naim to adopt an open systems approach so that third partties could build apps for the UQ. Then we'd have apps for various platforms depending on their popularity and the enthusiasm of the developers.

This would free Naim up to devise a way of letting me update my UQ without the need for Windows or RS232 and it would have made me consider the NDS.

So no Androids for me I'm too Paranoid.

Now where did I put that Kindle ....

Guy.. I think you have a good point.. If naim chose an open platform approach for the controller we could move away from these big controlling corporations and potentially use what ever platform we wanted....

BTW, I agree google is *far* from perfect, especially recently, it's just less of the devil than apple IMO.

+1 for the Android app. Is there a definitive answer to it being under development?

PS if Naim would like a beta tester I'm in (20 years in IT and much beta testing, plus a multitude of android devices, )

There was a definitive statement in the latest Connections magazine (link at the top of the posts on this Forum) than an Android Nstream is "on the roadmap". I will be going to the Bristol Show next month and will chase this up in person!

I used an iPad for a month for work but then spent my own money on an A1CS Fusion Premium+ Android tablet. Costs well under £200 and wouldn't swap it for an iPad - USB, HDMI and SD card storage are all things that the iPad doesn't have and it works just as well as far as I can  tell (34 years in IT). Certainly as nice to use - check the reviews on Amazon.

Thx Pev.
Much prefer Android too. See if you can get a rough timeline out of them, if possible. "On the roadmap" could mean anything.

I've just bought a Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 7" for £80. Using Bubble UPNP at the moment until N-Stream for Android is launched. Seems to do the trick and shows that you don't need to spend a fortune on Ipod/pad's for a glorified remote control.

Hi Simon

I have only seen Tom Johnson’s remark that it is on the roadmap and that they will keep people advised as information becomes available.

I read that as probably no time soon, but could be very wrong about that.

I must say that I have held similar views about Apple for many years now; I simply will not buy anything they produce. However, as wireless is not an option for us they don’t produce anything that I can’t get elsewhere – much cheaper.

I also wish that Naim had adopted an open source approach for the control software for their products as I think that by now many more of us would be enjoying a better experience. I don’t see it changing now though. The ability to ‘push’ to the streamers would remove all obstacles to a perfect experience in our case.

Regards

Peter

I'm using Bubble too (with JRiver & Twonky on the backend). It's an excellent app.

+1 for Bubble UPnP controlling the NDX with Twonky running on a QNAP NAS. I was surprised that it worked but as my other half and daughter have become addicted to Tiny Tower on the family iPad I was looking for something that would work on my Galaxy S3 phone. I am keen for the official Naim app to come out but this works just fine.

Just bumping this thread again to see if there is any news. We are slowly migrating away from Apple iOS to Android devices in the SinS household (and my younger son tells me Apple just isn't cool anymore irrespective of my views of their business practices - so that told me.. )  - anyway Andoid / Jelly Bean  tablets are really quite refreshing and great devices with better vfm in my opinion - BUT - I am hanging onto my iPad 1st generation just to run N-Stream - but the battery is starting to go now and i really would prefer to run N-Stream on my Nexus - please Naim any news?

PS.. Bubble UPnP is good - but not as neat as NStream - and of course does not have the volume or selector controls.

Androids are so yesterday ... what about an app for the Kindle Fire.

You could regard the iPad Mini as a really top notch remote control rather than thinking of its other functions .... i continue to find Apple very helpful and Google rather less so - though neither company has indulged in business practices that i find untenable unlike one fading giant ... Now Commodore were great at business practices they didn't have any and so the bestest home computer every made went by the way side or ...... New Amiga is £1,800 and you still can't find a decent web browser for it ... It's ugly too, but i'd still like one.

I recently saw the worst tablet i have ever seen .. It seemed to have an interface that looked like big tiles and you had to know exactly where to click on the tile to make it work ... dreadful design - no idea what system it used or who made it. I'll stick with my iPad ...

I use Twonky Beam app on Android phone for my QNAP / Twonky set up to Uniti and works fine (& has volume)......I have plenty of other 'issues' with Twonky but oddly Beam isn't one of them.

Agree with you all, without Naim I wouldn't own an iPad. Though it is a good product but not unique to warrant/justify the high price. Considering the alternatives are cheaper & can surf/browse the web, which accounts for what we use it for.

I bet more than 50% of iPad owners bought it for these "only on ipad" specialised apps. BTW, I paid £24 for Nserve.

The recent/latest androids UI & the quality (nexus 7 for instance) are very good, while the price is falling.

Definitely, I will not be replacing my Ipad2 Or buy any other Apple products. As the saying goes: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."

Naim, please free us from Apples' shackles...

I use an iPad out of choice, i think it is the best computing device i have ever bought. I would not buy an Android because of the security issues inherent in the way its app store works. However, ideally Naim should try to support all common tablet devices iPad, Android and Kindle Fire.

i use the iPad as a TV, Radio and Alarm Clock and music player when i have to travel ... no idea if you can do with the other devices ...

However, as i no longer use nStream ... It doesn't really matter to me. Just curious why some folk seem not to like Apple when they were instrumental in helping to make computers easy to use. I have been involved with several major computer companies through my work and find Apple one of the better companies .. The two worst begin with M and O.

Naim please move away from Microsoft orientated products ... I firmly believe the embedded Windows is the main cause of all the reported problems with Naim streaming devices ... Linn's choice of Linux does give them a significant advantage. Everything I have ever used that was built on Windows had problems ....

I use my iPad more than my iMac now...just so easy to use.

The iMac still gets the serious work though.  When they first came

out I had no desire to have one.  I already had an iPod Touch

for nStream.  I finally got one mainly for use on holiday, but

now use it for nearly everything.  Including this message.

Guy, which Naim streaming devices are you referring to using the MS OS? The Unitiserve and the HDX are the only ones I aware of.

To the point on security.. I think most tablets security is poor, I know with Apple iOS my employer uses a guarded virtual machine app that isolates the 'enterprise app' from the rest of the device.. Limiting the advantage of using the device in the first place because device security is poor.

The industry appears to be going in the direction of  VDI (virtual desktop) for  user devices/BYOD  to control security so as to minimise dependencies and weaknesses on the host device in recognition that it is increasingly essentially a consumer device these days.

Hello Simon

With Apple App Store, Apple tests apps before they are included. With the Google market place, it is open and buyer beware. BYOD to me is only acceptable with a sandboxed virtual session ... for one thing i don't want my employer to store its data on my device nor do i want them to have access to it as they would have had if i had let them put their app on it. I still think employers should provide the tools for the job, however virtual tools that leave no footprint are probably acceptable. Google Docs is a good example. Citrix provide some potential solutions too.

if you point a web browser at my UQ then a page appears that has a dot asp extension ... an unpleasant surprise ... Perhaps i have drawn the wrong conclusion. All the streamer updates require use of a windows device so you have to pay Microsoft to update the UQ .. Hence not an option for me. The jobs recently advertised by Naim focused on Microsoft background. Whilst i accept Naim can't ignore that some people still use MS products (we are now in the year of the snake), i think a more future looking open systems approach would be more encouraging. I guess most consumers don't care, but some of us would sooner not use products from a company with business practices we do not agree with .. Rightly or wrongly it does influence my buying decision. The Linn approach just seems better.

I do understand some of the comments about Apple, but the guys at the local Apple store are still refreshingly helpful and honest. And there is no horse in the products.

However, I still think Naim electronics are superb so a Reference DAC is definitely one to watch out for. Just don't like UPnP ..  push the data in to a big buffer and play from there .. eliminate the effects of the delivery mechanism.

all the best, Guy

Hi Simon - Bubbleupnp does have a volume control which works with my SU - not sure if it would in your separates system. If you go to Settings there is an option to turn the volume control on in the Now Playing section. It actually works as an attenuator as the maximum volume on Bubble is whatever the SU is set to - quite handy once you have sorted it out. Still want Andoid Nstream though...

As I've said elsewhere, I honestly think my £170 Android tablet is functionally better than the iPad I used for a month last year. Even ignoring price, a slot for SD cards (unlimited storage potential, take all your media with you on holiday!)plus built in USB and HDMI seal the deal for me.

Hi Pev, my son has got the Nexus at the moment so I'll try that later and see what I can do.. Dad is left with the iPad..

Guy I agree the people / staff in Apple shops have always been helpful and knowledgable. I remember when I bought my first generation iPod in the Apple shop in Minneapolis, all those years ago and the guidance and help was great (that iPod with its HDD is still working and is still one of the best sounding iPods IMO)... And then a few years ago I bought my iPad 1st generation in the Apple shop in Covent Garden, London, and again the staff were first class.

Agree with Pev, I love my Android tablet and Android smartphone. My iPod Touch barely gets used anymore.

I've heard Naim is working on Android apps but unfortunately no details available. Until then, no NDS for me.
