Nstream for Android / Bada

Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 25 August 2012

Does anyone know the roadmap for porting Nstream to android or Bada? I personally am disgusted by Apples monopolistic and greed ridden approach and will be looking to move away from Apple when my current Apple devices need replacing.

Once Nstream is ported I'll likely be moving my phone/tablet  The Samsung devices look great and provide innovation at better value.

I do wonder if Apple has read my mind and are spiting me as I have started finding iOS very unreliable and flaky and these devices have be come quite fustrating to use.

Simon - I know who it was and he is a senior Naim guy but I don't think it's fair to out him here - hope you understand.

I had a similar message echoed to me from a Naim visitor to Canada recently.

So it would appear unless Naim say clearly to the contrary we can only assume Naim will not be supporting Android devices for Naim controllers for the foreseeable future. This amateurish lack of clarity doesn't befit the company I usually hold in such high regard. Naim please take note.

Thank you

Hi Simon

I must say I echo your frustration if this is indeed the case as I understand that the Android apps can be run via a PC, which I was hoping might give us a usable solution.

My situation is the exact opposite to that of Guy’s and a few others here, to me it is Apple who are the ******** not Microsoft who I have found helpful and deliver a product that allows ME to decide how I want to work.

I have been given a Macbook Pro in an effort to show me how ‘better’ it is, well its on the floor in the lounge which is the best place for it in my view. I simply cannot tolerate the locked down approach you need to accept to use it. I suppose I could load windows on it, but with any luck someone will tread on it – very soon.

So, it may indeed be time to look elsewhere and just replace the NDX and Qute, the inability to push music to them is defiantly spoiling the experience in our view.

Regards

Peter

Lack of an Android based control is a real shame - I'm researching a major upgrade to my ageing system and Naim was coming out on top regarding functionality (yet to start auditioning). I don't own any Apple equipment and I'm loath to add more boxes/remotes; one of my (wife's!) objectives is to reduce the clutter.

I'm not sure I understand the mentality of this thread.  Android as a widespread platform could be dead in a few years - Samsung et al abandoning it if Google starts being more active in selling their own phones and tablets - why?  A significant risk Google would keep the cutting edge versions of Android to themselves.  And in the face of this uncertainty - why invest significant resources into Android?  I have to ask - do love your stereo or your phone/tablet/computer?  Do you like instant playlists or actual music?  Don't answer - sadly I already know.

Hmmm - I'm not sure you do if you can't understand our concerns - we have all invested significant resources in our Naim systems...

There is no reason to believe Android is any more or any less likely to be viable in the medium to long term than Apple's iOs. Our point is that by far the best way to control Naim streamers is via a tablet. Many of us choose to use an Android tablet and don't see why Naim can't port Nstream to Android in a reasonable time scale - or at least appear interested in doing so. Many other concerns manage to support both platforms.

In the meantime many of us are using other control points such as Bubbleupnp which is fine up to a point but it doesn't have the level of integration with Naim streamers that Nstream does.

I hope this clarifies things as I find your post equally puzzling.
