Cover art resolution: Synology NAS to NDS

Posted by: G Hubregtse on 25 August 2012

Having found only various partial explanations in searches, I was wondering if anyone has recently come to a definitive conclusion on this issue...

I am using a Synology 212+ with an NDS. It sounds great, but the cover art images that appear on the iPad3 with nStream (updated version) are of disappointingly low resolution. The JPEG folders as produced by dbPoweramp are of significantly higher quality, so the image information is there.

Having spent a few hours trying to find a solution, I was wondering whether anyone can confirm or contradict the folloing impressions:

- The problem lies with the transmission of the image by the Synology NAS music server, not in the nStream app.

- It is not possible to use the Synology NAS with another server programme (e.g. Asset / Twonky)

- Ticking or unticking the box on the media server thumbnail resolution control does not help

Any ideas?? Or is this something I am just going to have to learn to live with?

Waiting for my new DS212...

I think its possible to use asset upnp as software server (but only with a PC on the network)

Have you searched for an option on the synology UPNP server software for image resolution (or something like this?)

Hope this helps.

I will report here how this works here as soon as my Nas will be operating...

You may get more luck posting on a Synology users forum. I've never used their NAS devices, so I am not familiar with how you configure the built in DLNA server. There's probably a config file somewhere that you can edit to change the default behaviour for album art.

Generally speaking, the requesting device (e.g. nServe)  can specify the album art size required in the request URL, or can leave this parameter set to 0. On Asset, if the parameter is 0 you get set the album art in the native file resolution, if you specify a size, say 150, the art is scaled to 150x150 pixels.

Sorry, re-read my post.. The e.g. nServe, should have been nStream...

I'd confirm your impressions #1 and #3: not offering high resolution images seems to be the servers fault and you can't configure it anywhere in the GUI. I think it is very annoying. Apart from that the Synology media server is quite OK IMO.

#2 is not correct I think. You could e.g. try the MinimServer, which definitely offers high resolution images and also offers more intelligent browsing trees and support for tags like COMPOSER out of the box. There even exists a package for current ARM based Synology products. Downside is that you have to install java first, which is a bit cumbersome to install.

Thanks everyone...

I will explore the Synology forum and the possibilities of using other DLNA servers in more detail...

Best wishes

to resolve i did the following:

1. update sinology to DMS 4.0

2. change iPad to default with original cover art - this is in the UPnP device settings - NOTE you must select the iPad and the NDS (not just the NDS) as the iPad running n-stream appears as a UPnP device now

3. cleared cache on iPad (in n-stream - settings - clear UPnP  cache)

Oh my ... !

Trevor, I owe you something. I have been looking for a solution for this for ages. And I've been using DSM since 2.1 onwards. Perhaps that's the reason why I have overlooked that DSM 4.0 finally knows about this special UPnP device type.

For all the interested: the option hides under

Media Server -> DMA Compatibility -> Device List. And there search the line for your control device (iPad for me) by MAC or IP address and change the line "Default Profile" to "Default Profile with original cover". Then you will probably have to clear the playlist on your favourite UPnP control program (Kinsky for me) or restart it or clear its cache.

It works!

Just changed the settings, saved them and it worked straight away...

Thanks Trevor.

Is there a similar solution for same low res problem with a HDX system and iPad / n serve?

Cbr, the solution worked for my ND5. Many thanks Trevor

Hi,

had some trouble to solve the low res problem with my combination: ND5xs, Synology 212+, n-stream on iPad3 and on iPhone 4s:

First I tried to follow the instructions: Changed the lines of ND5 and iPad3 in the devicelist of synology mediaserver from "default profile" to "Default Profile with original cover" and saved this. Then cleared cover cache in nstream on the iPad. started nstream again: still low res covers.

Having a look to the mediaserver devicelist, what a surprise! The iPad line had changed "automatically" back to "default profile", ND5 still has "Default Profile with original cover" .

Now I really closed nstream on my iPhone, so it's also not in the background! Changed the ND5 line in the mediaserver back to "Default Profile" and the iPad line to "Default Profile with original cover" --> save the changes.
Start nstream on the ipad, clear cover cache.

Now wanted to listen to the Eric Burdon album "Love is all around": A nice cover with a lot of text in different font sizes Wow! Now it works! Fine!

It seems that the problem is solved and I can read text on the covers on the iPad Perhaps there is a problem if you have nstream running on different devices? I don't know.

Maybe someone who also still has trouble may find these helpful.

Thomas

Hi Thomas and others

Now my Synology DS212 is correctly installed.

I've seen the low res problem.

I've solved it with the solution provided here.

Thomas, yes I've got the seem behavior than yours ("automatically" back to "default profile")

I had also ASSET UPNP as server running simultaneously (and the integrated server of my box)

I've stopped all except Synology media server.

Than I've applied the process (but with Nstream shut down on my I phone out of the upnp navigation in example the naim device (uniti) on CD)

I've shut down the Pc from I connect the Synology device

I've launched Nstream than the upnp input

Before any connection we the server I've purge both images and upnp settings (2 items in the Ntream settings)

Now I've connected the server (media server)

The refresh of the images was very slow but now all works fine in hi res.

(even if the "default profile" was again associated with my IPhone)

Now a question :

Only the search by "album" provide a small cover image on N stream.

is there anybody who knows if this is related to the server or the control point (Media server or nstream)

I suspect that is related to the control point...

I find too small the album cover ( a coverflow should be added to nstream...)

also I would like to know if there is a solution to display album with  cover alphabetically sorted by artist ?

This issue is doing my swede in!

Have tried all of the above plus uninstalling the nStream app etc. and upgraded to the latest version of DSM but the bloody thing keeps resetting my ipad back to "default profile" rather than "default with original cover art" every time!!

Arrgghhh!

ps well done Naim loving the new nStream app and also managed to upgrade the firmware on my NDX all by myself!

Same problem for me: for what reason ever, the NAS occasionally resets the profile of my iPad to "default profile".

Same issue over here. Incredibly annoying. Does it have something to do with the DMA settings maybe?

2 interesting observations:

1- As my Nas was in deep hibernation, I've reseted both Upnp settings and images in cache In Nstream on my Iphone.

When I've open again nstream (closed during a previous Upnp session on the "by album" page.

Images are automatically reloaded (but very quickly and keeping the nAs in hibernation !)

So I'm not sure the images in cache were really erased...

2- I've reactivated  ASSET UPNP with Synology media server.

As the images from SmS are in low resolution Asset send images at the correct resolution.

These 2 points are contradictory.

First it let me think that Nstream (control point) doesn't correctly clear the Upnp memory but in the other hand as Asset works fine we can think it's only related to the Upnp server

So I have two questions.

To Naim people :

What exactly nstream do when we clear 1) Upnp settings and 2) images  ?

To Synology people :

Why the upnp device profile is not correctly keep in Synology media server settings ?

well,

Mr Synology recommend the following procedure.

(That works fine here)

1- create a new shared folder (not named "music"

2- move you music file on this new folder

3- check the option to load image from named "folder.jpg or cover;jpg

(under DSM : multimedia server > second tab "parameters")

(Personally I rip with DBpoweramp in wav and the cover album is always stored as "folder.jpg in addition of tracks files)

4- Do NOT check the first option in ythe same tab to load low resolution images in place of hi-res

5- clear the uPnP memory on Nstream (both parameters and images)

6- apply the "default with original cover"

(Media Server -> DMA Compatibility -> Device List. And there search the line for your control device (iPad or Iphone) by MAC adress ; note,  you should search first the Mac in the apple OS)

Now all you covers should be displayed in high resolution.

You also can do the same process to restore the file in the original system folder named "music"

The images will be displayed in high resolution...

Thanks Persey

Hope this helps

Same problem for me: for what reason ever, the NAS occasionally resets the profile of my iPad to "default profile".

As it has turned out over the past months, the spontaneous resetting to "default profile" appears to happen only when I switch the UPnP controller on the iPad: Usually I work with the Kinsky app and as long as I keep using that app only, there is no spontaneous resetting. Only (but not always?) when I switch to PlugPlayer the Synology resets that iPad to "default profile".

Hi

I have just applied the settings above regarding "device list" for the cover art issue and it now works a dream

my lovely high res images appear as expected.

I have to say many thanks to you chaps for making things work and taking the time to help other members like myself. It's very much appreciated!

Well, I will investigate the other features of my ds213+ but otherwise I am really impressed with it.

Hi
I have had exactly the same, really annoying problem of the Naim n-Stream always reverting back to Default and then low-res album art.
I raised the issue with Synology and they have given me a new version of Media Server that has support for Naim.  So far it's working well.  It retains the setting and high-res art is consistently delivered to my iPad

Media Server

Posted on: 30 July 2013 by AlainRch

hi

is it special version of media server or is it possible to have it with download update ?

Posted on: 31 July 2013 by JLD

Hi Glen

Do you have any version number for this new Media server ?

Thanks

Posted on: 31 July 2013 by GlenW

Hi,

The version I've been given is 1.1-2403

Just ask Synology for the version with Naim n-Stream support.  Cheers.
