Cover art resolution: Synology NAS to NDS
Posted by: G Hubregtse on 25 August 2012
Having found only various partial explanations in searches, I was wondering if anyone has recently come to a definitive conclusion on this issue...
I am using a Synology 212+ with an NDS. It sounds great, but the cover art images that appear on the iPad3 with nStream (updated version) are of disappointingly low resolution. The JPEG folders as produced by dbPoweramp are of significantly higher quality, so the image information is there.
Having spent a few hours trying to find a solution, I was wondering whether anyone can confirm or contradict the folloing impressions:
- The problem lies with the transmission of the image by the Synology NAS music server, not in the nStream app.
- It is not possible to use the Synology NAS with another server programme (e.g. Asset / Twonky)
- Ticking or unticking the box on the media server thumbnail resolution control does not help
Any ideas?? Or is this something I am just going to have to learn to live with?

Thanks you very much Glen !!
Hi
what email address should we send for the version with Naim n-stream support ?
Do you know if this version is also usable with n-serve ?
You can download this version through Synology Assistant.
Hi Glen
I've installed the 1.1.2403 version of media server
But I do not have "naim n-stream" device
I only can find my IPhone from its mac adress and apply to it "default with original cover" as option...
Do you run an Ipad?
Your image shown the profil "naim n-stream" both for the "n-stream" device and for "Naim Audio Ltd. UnitiQute"
Is it available from the menu ?
Here I haven't these options...

Hi Jean Luc,
Synology emailed me the version so it may be 'tweaked' to include the Naim n-Stream function - sounds like that.
Best is to go to Synology directly and request the version that has this. This way they'll will understand the demand for the Naim support and it's likely to get into subsequent releases.
Yes, I am running it on an iPad and it's in the menu as per the screenshot. Perhaps the only other difference is I'm running 4.3 beta on the Synology but this didn't support Naim - just the version I was emailed.
It's still working well :-) I think they've cracked it!
Hi Glen
I've asked directly Synology support, Persey just indicate to me to download the beta .spk file with the usual method..
I've requested the file by e-mail.
But It could be simpler if you can post for all your file (received by e-mail) here (or a link) ...
You can also send me it by e-mail jldaureil(at)alicepro.fr and I will see if I can store it on a server for a public download from this forum page...
I thank you very much in advance...
Jean-Luc
(just for info, I've found a link to this page on a french forum posted by a anglophile for french naim users! Just to say that sometimes we help without knowing
Hi Folks,
I also wait it long time ago and requested synology to provide the *.pkg to me.
Interesting as I raised a support call with Synology explaining the version of Media Sever with Naim device functionality but the reply from synology is that they are not aware of this version?
so now I am confused.
My synology is running on 4.2 latest and MS running on latest also. I do not have Naim options available to me as shown in the above screen shot?
hope somebody can get to the bottom of this.
regards, Anton
Hi all,
I've asked Synology to make this available - just waiting to here back from them...
Hmmm just got this in a couple of minutes ago directly from Synology...
Hi,
thank you for the inquiry.
We do not have an official version of Media Server package with Naim profile at the moment. However, this feature will be included in our next official release of the Media Server package.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Synology have asked that I do not provide my copy as it is specific to my configuration and they are still testing. Glad to hear it will make the next release.
Hello
I also contacted Synology and got the same reply than Gianno. Let's hope the release will be soon :-)
Hi,
Same answer here...
Waiting for a next release...
Hi Folks,
I also got the same message from synology replied.
This is great. The more people that raise a support ticket the more Synology will understand our requirements. Lets hope the fix is available and working in the next release of MS.
ATB, Anton
Hi all,
The new version of Synology is out and it seems to have the Naim support included :-)
At least it's still got the settings for me and album art is at full res.
Hi HoPo,
Have you your covers when you just select "album" ?
N-stream do not show cover for all presentation list so I could be possible you do get always you covers depending the way you search in your library
There is a improvement area here.
Personnaly I like the "coverflow" like Itune very cool... and It could be nice to have this in n-stream.
JL
Thank Glen for the info about the latest DSM + media server versions
Now I've set "n-stream" profile for my I phone and all seems to work fine now
No worries. It's great when a support process works and results in product improvement!
I found Synology to be very helpful and responsive with this. Credit to them.
Sorry, which one was "THE" n-stream profile? Can't find one that works for me.

Check out GlenW's post (with picture) on page one of this thread to see how the Synology Media Service device list should look once updated to the latest version.
To get this to work properly for me I had to do the following:
1. Close all apps on ipad/iphone
2. Launch nstream on the ipad/iphone device and connect to media server
3. Now goto diskstation manager and in Media Server device list hit the reset button to clear everything and then refresh. It should find both the Naim streamer and the ipad/iphone.
4. Change the profile on both to "Naim n-Stream" and select 'Save'
5. Go back to the iPad/iPhone and clear both the upnp and image caches.
6. Relaunch nstream and the new image cache should be built with the original cover and the settings should stick
I found that if there were other apps on the iPad at first it didn't seem to work properly (I guess it wasn't seeing it as a 'n-stream' device).
Hope this helps
Nick

Thanks a lot, Nick! The explanation is great. Now my system works nearly perfect for me. I've waited for this option since I bought my Uniti two years ago. Cheers
