How to backup from Unitserve
Posted by: Allram61 on 26 August 2012
Hi,,, first of all sorry for ev misspelling...
I have tried to search for the right way for backup from my UnitServe, ifound a lot of backupsolutions via pc´s and mac´s but not directly from the UnitServe. Can someone please help me how to do,,, or point me to an topic which explains the steps. I cant find it in the manual either. I have a Synology Nas with 2 disks raid.
1: Is it via the desktopclient you do it?
2: And is the backup a "file to file" backup?
Thanks in advance
Magnus
Magnus have you read Section 2.9 of the UnitiServe reference manual? That is where to start.
Hi Tog,
I tend to agree, although the UnitiServe is the exception to the rule in that it makes ripping CDs very easy. I haven't tried the Unitiserve's backup functionality as the Readynas Duo was doing it from before the upgrade became available.
Every time an NDX software upgrade is released my family braces itself for the frustration and trauma that follows. This time the PC reported an error when I downloaded the zip file (which I eventually ignored), the upgrade failed to open after it installed (solved by opening from the icon) and I picked the wrong USB Port (a 50% chance and I blew it!). Three silly but annoying problems, and this was in the course of the easiest upgrade so far! The first time I did it I didn't realise I had to install software to make the interconnect work and I had to use pliers to remove screws to plug it in. The second time it refused to work until I used the USB on the back of the laptop.
I put up with this because I'm an enthusiast.

Hi Bart.
Yes i have already gone through that ,,, and it ref. To 4.8.4.
And When i come to the part after chosing an empty share for my backup, it just returns to the prev. page... It realy makes me crazy.
And to Tog and KRM ,,, thanx for your input, but i dont see how that helps me.

I suppose the userve works like the other servers, but you cannot be sure.
In the list of shares, find the share you want to use for backup, press the "use as backup" button. Go to the maintenance group on the tools tab, open backup scheduler, press the add button, now in the list of drives in the destination dropdown box you should see the share you have set for backup.
When the first backup is completed and it can take many hours, you will see the mq folder with all the ripped albums in the backup. I also have one playlist, but I am not sure this is part of the automated backup.
If you edit meta data for an album a UserEdits.xml file is found in the directory with the ripped files, so these edits are also backed up.

I have not seen the Kiko, but it is a streamer so what is so simple an intuitive about it? Does it backup the music itself? Can you use the songcast feature without install it? Can you run it without Linns active speakers if you ask Linn?
I still find the Naim servers one of the most userfriendly ways of getting into streaming, and they can play music even when the network is down. Before the streamers everybody on the forum wanted streamers. Now it is the update feature that must be changed, if that happens there will be something else that must be fixed otherwise...

My local Linn dealer is sure Linn is so complecated so they offer installation packages of course at a price. To be fair this includes ripnas, switch, cables and rip software. Get a Naim server wich is plug and play in the original before MS understanding of that term, and free Naim support.

I didn't find the Qute in the least difficult to set-up ... plugged it in and found my Vortexbox and the music thereon ... loaded up nStream and I could use it straight away. I once tried a Uniti with a Rip-Nas and that didn't seem to want to know enough, but I blame the Rip-Nas which had gone twonky.
Of course, if I didn't know how to set-up my network and Vortexbox then ... I keep telling my mother it is easy, but she just seems get stuck when she phones me for help and I say check out your subnet mask and make sure when you "AND" it with your router IP, that your allocated host IP is in the network range and while you are at it do a quick ping sweep to see if another host has claimed your IP from DHCP server, and could you check there are no ACLs on your firewall denying access to the required UDP and TCP ports on your streamer ... strange how some folk find this hard I had the same problem trying to teach her to use "vi" and "nroff" to write letters (she ended up with a pen).
However, she can use an iPad ... no problem.
For me the complicated bit on a UQ or any Naim streamer is if you need/want to put a new software update on it ... then you need to call somebody who understands Windows and has RS232 and a lucky wizard's hat. Why did it have to be so hard .... Linn et al score lots of points in the way they handle this. Until it is solved I would not want to buy another Naim streamer. However, content to use an alternative in to the Naim DAC for a while. which sounds superb.
The Sonos is just about the easiest thing to set-up ... I had to change from the supplied Ethernet cable to one I had, for reasons I still can't fathom, but other wise ... plug in bridge, plug in player, rock and roll.
When you just plug it together and it works then it's easy ... when it doesn't then let the fun begin.
Computer technology has progressed at a snail's pace really .... IP networking is ancient.

Hi Claus,,, and tank you for your reply. I was at first a kittel bit confused over the steps you described,, but then i realised that these procedures where through the desktopclient and not directly via the serverGUI. Am i right?

Hi Tog. I agree with most of what you say above but "Tinkering and playing around"? Seriously, I suppose that initially setting up a NAS and Mac Mini may seem like an enthusiasts thing to do but it really was straight forward. I have not had to tinker with it since setup over a year ago apart from adjustments to metadata (which we all have to do) and software updates. The only paling about I do with it is playing music.
Software updates in the any environment is a breeze compared to updating a Naim Streaming product. Another point is, you have to go and find a special lead (RS232 to USB). What's that about? you can get one on Amazon for £2.89 so why is it not in the box with all Naim streaming product? I'm sure Naim could get them cheaper in bulk.
Considering the price of the kit, that is probably the meanest thing I have seen from a company for a long time.

This is why my us is not backed up, can't be bothered with trying to figure it out. The worst that can happen is i have to re rip my CDs.
Despite my rudimentary knowledge of networking, I have managed to (a) schedule daily of backup my uServe to my NAS using the backup system built into the uServe, and (b) backup my NAS to an external usb hard drive for added security.
It's really NOT that hard.
Allram -- I have read what the manual says in 4.8.4 and believe it to be accurate. You first have to create a Network Share, and then make that share a Backup. So what I did was create a directory on my NAS called "uServe Backup," I added it as a network share for the uServe, and then as it says in 4.8.4 made it a Backup. Sometimes you have to wait a few moments, meaning the moment you create that new directory on your NAS your uServe might not see it yet.
hi all,

As far as I can tell, the answer is "no." You have to back that up yourself -- either manually or by having another piece of backup software access the Downloads folder and copy it to the nas.
I have been meaning to follow up on this question myself, as it seems to me that the uServe's backup program only does the Store where cd's have been ripped, and not the Downloads folder. Why that should be the case is not clear to me!
thanks Bart,
also does not make sense that the downloads folder is not backed up. it would cost naim nothing to just inlucde it int he backup routine they have already for the ripped store.
naim?
Why not send the question/request to support? and send the answer to the rest of us. With a 1 tb it is not an issue for me but I would also expect the 2 tb at least to have it as an option to backup the download folder.

guys i spoke with steve in support this morning and backup of the download folder on 2tb US is not supported at all from the desktop client..
Steve told me that the idea in not having it backed up comes from the idea that people would already have any "downloaded" music already backed up through some other medium.
i aksed also about the furture inclsuions of the folder int he dektop client backup of the ripped store but steve did not know that this would be the case, but that there is a very big upgrade to the US int he works for the next couple of months.
after spekaing with steve, i think i will take his advice and create a new share ont he new synology NAS i bought and then copy acroos all the hi res music fromt he US download folder to the new NAS share, then it will be prptected by virtue of the twin 4TB hard drioves running synology hybrid raid..
sound like a good option?
Kind regards,
That is how I do it -- I copy the Downloads folder over to the nas. But I do not rely on the raid array on the nas; I back up the nas to a usb drive. Highly recommended
That gives me 3 copies -- one on uServe, one on nas (or two, depending on how you count the raid volume) and one on the usb drive.
