Unitiserve SSD, will no longer rip my CDs

Posted by: The Meerkat on 02 September 2012

Hi there, I wonder if anyone could help me.

I got my Unitiserve SSD in April, and immediately ripped my entire CD collection, with no problems. I haven't ripped a CD since then (April). Yesterday, I bought some new CDs from various locations, and attempted to rip them. However, the Unitiserve ejects the discs stating, "Not enough space, less than 1000MB of space". I got some of my old CDs that the US had ripped before, but the same error message came up.

In play mode,The Unitiserve will play all the CDs perfectly. It is also "talking" to my Qnap NAS drive and plays back everything on the drive. It just won't rip anymore.

I have checked my 1TB NAS drive. It shows it as being healthy, with three quarters of space still spare.

Please could someone give me an idea what may be wrong.

Many thanks

Have you tried rebooting the US?? I found the "ripping cache" would occasionally get full and stop further ripping.  On rebooting, the cache would then clear and it would rip normally. I suspect this may not apply to yours as it is several months since you last ripped but worth a try?

Hi Nick

I have shut it down in the way that the instruction manual suggests, and also unplugged it. left it for 10 minutes, then switched it back on. Still won't rip, but plays perfectly.

Don't know if this helps but early on when ripping all my CDs my UnitiServe SSD once did something a bit strange in that it ripped some CDs to the SSD flash memory (Internal Hard Disk) and not the Music Store on the NAS as intended.  This will obviously fill up very quickly.

Worth checking on desktop client if you have any albums stored internally.

Hi Glyn

That's a good point, but I don't have a Desktop Client to check it. I am a Mac user.

As a point of interest, why did your US do that? And how did you clear it?

I'm a Mac user too but DTC is the easiest way to look at the status of the SSD memory so I sometimes use windows on bootcamp so I can access DTC. You acan also look via the web interface.

Using the web interface you can look at Music Stores on the System menu.  Then click 'Manage Music Stores' and then the status of the Internal Hard Disk.  This should be locked (padlock symbol) and when you look at the status should be read only and contain zero albums.

Mine managed to contain about 5 albums (still no idea how it happened) and I only got rid of them with the kind assistance of Phil Harris at Naim.

If yours doesn't contain anything then I don't know whats happening to your US.

Cheers

Thank you everyone!

I have managed to sort it. For some very strange reason, when I checked 'Manage Music Stores', the only Store showing was the SSD. The store on the NAS had vanished. I have now re added the NAS store and my Unitiserve is now ripping the CDS perfectly.

Thanks once again guys

A story with a happy ending  - whatever system you have it is great feeling when a problem goes away and you can play your new CDs.

David, did you confirm that the discs you ripped previously went to the NAS, not the SSD?  My guess is that you've filled up most of the SSD storage.  Even without the dtc you can check that on your iPhone.  With nServe, go to Settings, then Devices, and select the internal store.  See if the music is in there, rather than in the network (NAS) share.

Hi Bart

Everything that I ripped previously, and the CDs that ripped today, have gone to the Store on the NAS. However, I have just gone in to the browser on my Mac, and the SSD drive (Which is locked) shows the following...

Total space 8,389 MB

Space remaining 3,700 MB

Number of albums 0

Is this what it should look like?

Yes that's the same as mine.
