ND5XS - Toslink to Coaxial converters

Posted by: Iver van de Zand on 06 September 2012

Hi forum members,

I am very happy with my Naim system composing of XS pre/power amp, FlatCap XS and the ND5XS. Apart from my NAS stored music, I also use the ND5XS DAC section for other digital sources. Main one is the Digital TV Settop Box that is connected into the toslink of my ND5XS.

I have two other sources I want to connect to the ND5XS: an Airport Express and a DuneB1 blueray DVD. Here is where the problem is. Both the Airport as the Dune have tosslink digital outs. The only spare digital inputs My ND5XS has left now, are Coacial RCA and Coaxial BNC. Are there any good (!!) converters available to "convert" tosslink into coax ? I bought two of these converters from some oBscure website at €20 each, but they don't work and probably have never worked :-). The converters have the size of a pack of sigarettes with a tosslink input and a coax output. The is also a small powersupply. Anyway, they dont work so I cannot test them.

Any good advizes on what converter I should buy ? Do I loos a lot of sound quality when converting tosslink onto coax ? On an recent audio show, I was suggested to look for the Atlona converter priced at some €70 each.

Tx Iver

Nobody with a similar problem ? The NDX has the same connections, I belive, so it occurs also for NDX users with various other digital sources

sorry - I can't help you. But it sounds quite funny. It reminds me to one of those converters...

Hi Iver -

When I first bought the Naim DAC, I also bought the Naim-recommended M-Audio Transit, a digital-to-digital converter for going from USB to S/PDIF.  It worked really well.

M-Audio also makes the CO2, another d-2-d converter that does what you are looking for.  I have not tried it, but based on my experience with the Transit, I would think the odds are pretty high that it will work just fine.

Good luck!

Not sure if this helps but

  • CYP AU-D21 2 Way Digital Optical Audio Switcher
  • CYP AU-D41 4 Way Optical Audio Switcher
  • CYP AU-D2 Digital Audio Coaxial/Optical Converter

The AU-D2 is a versatile digital audio converter, either coaxial to optical or optical to coaxial. Simply
select one of the digital audio inputs for two identical audio signals in both output formats.

I've never used any of these devices, but I know of people using them and they do work.

No idea on their effect on SQ.
