NDS tested in Stereoplay

Posted by: T38.45 on 08 September 2012

This is the first test I've seen... NDS w/ XPS on same level like Linn KDS/1 (with 192/24 Linn got one point more).... They didn't do an A/B bench, but NDS belongs now to the best streamers  (references) you can buy... Shame they didn't test 555PSU level

I didn't know that Naim cuts frequencies (30kHz-  nothing above this), while KDS goes beyond this...anyway, guess this is personal taste!

Outstanding job Naim!

So will there be a 555level thing?

Add on: NDS got more points than they old KDS!

Hi Ralf -

Thanks for posting this -- was wondering when we were going to see an NDS - KDS/1 shootout!

And I agree with your 555PS comment.   In fact, given the degree to which a Naim network player's sound quality is determined by level of its external PS, it would have been even better had they tested all three options for the NDS.

This was just one reviewer's opinion of course, but I am sure Naim are pleased by the result!

why this  obsession with what reviewers say

Posted on: 09 September 2012 by aht

Well, while many forum members seem to think that all audio journalists are bribed by the advertisers in their magazines, I find their views to be of interest because:

1)  The veterans have many years of experience with a wide variety of kit

2)  They sign their own names to their opinions, unlike audio forum posters

+ 2 AHT.

I think the OP. was passing on some interesting information and showed no obvious signs of being obsessed.

The test has only a minoR part on the sound quality (though very much praised in the small paragraph), but a great part was on the technical build, why Naim choose that approach and how different the DAC set up is. Interesting article and a lot of stuff clearified !

Hi Dave,

it is not online but (usually) the german naim distributor music-line posts all naim tests in pdf after a few days, go for music-line.biz > support > naim > tests

Ralf, was this test done with XPS, XPS2 or XPS-DR?

Posted on: 09 September 2012 by DaveBk

Thanks Ralf, I'll take a look in a few days and see if they have posted it.

Posted on: 09 September 2012 by T38.45

It was a XPS-DR.

I would say goole did a good job on translating a paper except it suggested that

"Kompromissloser Netzwerk- Spieler mit hoher Praxistaug- lichkeit und sensationell fokussiertem, energiegeladenem, farbenprächtigem Klang."

stands for

"Uncompromising network players with high practical suitability and sensationally focused, energetic, colorful marine sound."

I hope they meant something good by colorful marine part
