Qute v SU

If the SU was rated a 10 what would the Qute be rated in comparison?

Naim rates the SU at 80 and the UQ at 30

I was referring to overall not watts. SU 10/10 what would the Qute rank out of 10?
Posted on: 10 September 2012 by A funny thing happened on the way to the

I have both, the UQ   is pitched at a different market than the SU.  I think the SU is blindingly good. The UQ is probably better vfm but I don't regret upgrading to SU and keeping the Qute as a bedroom. System. Holding aside $ UQ 8.5/10 and SU 9/10

Wow. I have a NaimUniti. I upgraded to SU and put the NU in the kitchen. Guess that makes the NU a 9? Is this a logarithmic scale? On a slightly more serious note, the SU does sound very very good. More control. Lovely bass. I really can't say how much better though but I'm glad I bought it! Cheers Ian

I'll be home auditioning a SU this weekend.  Also placed a request to Naim USA to upgrade my uServe to 2TB.

In my experience the UnitiQute is a clever and versatile little amp, but I preferred a Nait 5 in a direct comparison, and the owner of the Nait 5, while strongly inclined to like the UQ more, did the same.

That's what you need to do. I'm happy with the UQ in my office. The SU is probably better, but I don't need the extra power. So if you have the cash go for it ... but the UQ is very nice little all in one box ... shame I can't upgrade the firmware.

When I bought my Uniti 18 months ago I went into the dealer to audition the Qute and was expecting to buy one.  The Qute didn't meet my expectations for SQ, but Uniti was a significant step forward.  So I handed over the extra cash and rehearsed my speech for my wife when I got home.  So I would expect the SU would be a major improvement.

As always, listen to both and decide if it's worth the extra for you.

I went to a local dealer a few weeks ago to audition the UQ trying to convince myself that it was good enough, but I made the mistake to ask for a SU audition too. The difference is really there and I had to get the SU. If SU is 10/10 I'd give 6/10 to the UQ. I now have a SU in my living room with some B&W CM9 and I am really happy with it.

I have both the UQ and the SU, the former in the bedroom and the latter in the lounge. There have been many moments when in the bedrooms listening to the UQ where I would just be blown away with how good it sounds for such a small shoebox that it is. I don't think you can put a numerical value to the SQ and even if you could, it would require some very accurate A/B comparisons of matching dB, etc to properly and usefully make such comparisons. At the end of he day I think it boils down to speaker matching, room environment as determining considerations!

Develyn:

While naimUnT is no doubt correct that it is impossible objectively to quantify SQ (or any other manifestation of aesthetic judgment for that matter), I, like you, prefer to pose the question in terms of subjective preference.  When I auditioned the Superuniti, I was not interested in the Qute, but only the SU and the Uniti2, which my dealer did not have in stock at that time.  He did have a Qute, which I wish I had had time to listen to as well.  So later, I asked him how he would rate the SU against the U2 on a scale of 1 - 10.  He said SU=10; U2=7.

I am hoping to pick my SU up along with its speakers on Wednesday of next week (I live 200 miles from the dealer.)  There is no real listening position in this postage stamp of an apartment, so until we move into a new house some months away, I will be breaking it in.  The "listening position" will be as follows: There is a small alcove about 7 feet behind my chair and at about a 45 degree angle.  The speakers will be on a shelf in that alcove, approximately two feet apart with the SU between them.

I will be so excited, I will probably post a review on the appearance of the shipping crates as I bring them through the door.

Best regards,

Russ

Riss Congratulations on the SU investment! I feel excited for you and can only say you are in for a treat, many sleepless nights but a wonderful and engaging musical experience! Be patient and tell yourself it will sound even better in 6 months time!

Don't want to hijack the thread, but Thanks, naimUnT. I know that both speakers and SU will, unlike me, improve with age, but I also have a sneaky suspicion that it will sound somewhat better, right out of the box, than my current JVC theatre amp with Bose Acoustimax. Best Regards, Russ
