Playlists not working since streamer update

Posted by: thebigfredc on 11 September 2012

In both nserve and nstream, only the first track of the playlist plays.

Rather defeats the purpose of the playlist function.

Anybody any ideas above the usual reboot which I have tried.

What router are you using? I've had problems with plug player, seemed to solve it by dumping my bt home hub and getting a net gear router....

Thanks for replying Ade.

I am using a Netgear DGN3500 which I installed a year ago.

The playlist problem though only occurred after the 3.16 update to my NDX.

Does the queing function work? I don't really use the playlists myself, I tend to just queue albums up... If the queue works can't think why playlists don't work. You havent got plug player / kinsky running in the background? I've had problems having more than one client running on my iPhone at the same time... Hope this helps!

I had this problem and Phil suggested turning on UPNP on the Naim stream app on my iPad It now will play all of the playlist from serve as before, although you loss the ability to queue or use playlist built on iPad. This needs addressing as if it can see and play the first track you would think it could play them all!!

Eureka! Yes Selecting UPNP in nstream sorted it out.

Richard nailed it, so thanks go out to you.

All - I had a similar issue. I forced the Nstream cache to be cleared - then forced  Nstrream to close down, then powered down the ipad  and then rebooted it. Restarted Nstream made sure iphone and ipad were not competing with concurrent versions of Nstream - and my server not found messages disappeared and my playlist corruption issues went. Been rock solid for a fortnight now with full UPNP functionality using Asset V4.

I cleared the problem just after having had had written to Naim support with my issues.

Update.. Thanks to an email I have received from Naim support.(thanks Phil). I have looked into my play list issue further. I know understand how playlists are stored and work on Nstream. The media is referenced by the upnp index, and not the reference or path to the NAS. What was happening I was tweaking my Asset index database by changing some of the index parameters, this meant that some of my media in the playlists stored on my ipad then became unreferencanble as the upnp server index changed. Since I have kept my Asset indexing parameters constant  and my upnp server IP address (as opposed to NAS) static  I have had no issues with playlists.

I also now know  how to save and share playlists!!!  fantastic.. Use the Application file sharing feature under ITunes, and you see all your playlists XML files on the iTunes applications tab linked with Nstream..... Perhaps most are aware of this but it was news to me

Thank you for the excellent advice SImon.

It didn't work though, so I have enabled UPNP compatibility mode in nstream settings which takes funtionality back to how thinggs were before - which is ok.

Hi Ray,  yes this new functionality puts added requirements on the upnp server, and I guess sdifferenrt software varies in its capability here, correct operation here.

Given these new demands, I can't help think it would be useful for Naim to publish a upnp server software inter working list... One with full functionality and one with partial compatability mode functionality.

Cheers

Just purchased a new ndx, and having the same Issue. I am using nstream, with a western digital 2 TB powered storage for 24/96 files. The western digital is a USB device. I have tried all the suggestions and completed a forum search but no topics address the issue. When I do find my dlink nas server on my home network with my mp3 music, the option does come up to queue music and create a playlist. I do not want to move all my network gear to my listening room. Thus, my reason for the WD storage device until I have a long term solution. I use the dlink for sonos music in my other rooms and pictures, school work, etc.

is it the USB function that limits the playlist capability?

Scott, for upnp to work and manage playlists, your storage needs to be on the Ethernet network (not attached to the network player USB).

With editable playlists, what actually happens is the Nstream  creates list of media file references which is your playlist. This list is stored on your iPad/iPod and when selected, is uploaded to your Naim network player. Each list item in the playlist file  contains the path to the NAS storage on your network, plus the index of the media on your Upnp server for both the music and art.

If the address of your NAS changes, or the index changes on your server then that playlist file will be unreachable, and a little red cross appears against it on the latest version of Nstream.

Now you can see why pronlems can occur if the Nstream and the network  player are slightly out of step., and why clearing buffers and caches may sometoimes help.

Thanks for the info. If not referencing music through the network or hard wired to a router then the play list function is not available ( with USB). Can I plug a NAS device directly into the NDX if it is a UPNP NAS device? As I said before, I do not want to move my entire network / hardware bundle to the basement listening room, too much stuff.... I want a dedicated hard wired Storage for my 24/96 files that I can create a queue, and make play lists. My 24/96 files drop out with wireless playback. Thank you again

No,you need to attach your NAS to your NDX using Ethernet. You could set up a little switch to plug NAS and NDX into and connect that little switch to your main LAN/Internet router via a wireless bridge

I was coming to the same conclusion, thanks. I have been Told that the NAS option is slower and not as good sounding as the USB connection.

thanks again,
