New iPhone 5. Will you be upgrading?

Posted by: Tony2011 on 12 September 2012

I still use an iPhone 3GS. I never thought Apple had done enough to persuade me to upgrade with the Iphone 4/4S. Now,  the 5th generation has grabbed my attention and I'll definitely be placing an order.

Anyone else tempted to upgrade?

t-Mobile huh? Yup - me too!

Time to retire my 3GS which doesn't manage more than about 12 hours on the battery without taking or making calls...

There is a theory that one could be said to be following the "I will do anything to avoid Apple" crowd...

I just use the device that I feel offers the most pleasant (and above all consistent) user experience...

...and no - I'm not a Mac user at home generally, I have several but they all run Windows under Bootcamp.

Coming via Orange so same company. Went for the £41 per month deal. Will sell my iphone 4 which is begining to slow a little now.

Looking forward to experiencing 4g wireless Broadband later in the year.

Well, due to the incompetence of carphonewhorehouse my iPhone 5 order has been cancelled. Seems that when dealing with me they're as bad as they were 12 years ago.

I got soooo tired of how slow the 3 was.  If you use it a lot, you'll really appreciate the speed of the newer phones.  If you want to save some money, get a 4s now that the 5 is out.

t-Mobile here in the States is the only major carrier that does not sell the iPhone.

Yep. It's on its way. Fully loaded 64gb. Will it be worth the wait? I'll let you know...

Simple considerations for me. Length of contract and timing of purchase dictated that I went 3G to 4 and now ditto the 5. My Home button is stocking; my father wants an iPhone ergo I buy the 64 GB and I get the 5. It's an incremental improvement but then how much more is there to do. NFC is an untested mess so, well, what is there?

I have a 4S and don't see the short battery life issue.

On the original question, no not until the iPhone 6,7 or 8. I generally skip one or two upgrades if the phone is still working.

No plans to upgrade. 4s works quite well for me (I'm a light user, mostly calls, private email and navigation - for business it's Blackberry to the end! *), and I'm not really thrilled about the new larger form factor **).

*) Which is quite near, judging from the company's financials and analysts' reports

**) I'm sure they will at some point introduce the iPhone mini.

iOS 6:

Looks like Maps is a disaster.

Re the iPhone, hopefully Samsung and Nokia will up their marketing game - they seem to have the tech.

Not seeing any "disaster" on Maps with IO6 at all.

1) On my 32GB 4 with 23GB used up it is way faster than Google Maps. Mrs. H. has found the same on her 16GB 4 and her 64GB iPad. So the issue would be... ???

2) It is giving much more accurate distance readings, which is important for me when I go out running and want to do a mile and not 0.8 of a mile. Dropped pins are more manoevrable too which helps when you're trying to calculate something with a bit of precision.

3) Okay so public transport info. simply takes you to apps. at the moment but as someone with little choice but to use public transport I never used it in Google Maps either because it was hopeless there and could not deal with anything remotely sophisticated like a bus journey that involved two buses or one that included two buses of which one was going in the opposite direction to which one might expect.

4) There is a deal more low level detail in terms of clear, legible street names without having to zoom in excessively. As someone with a visual impairment that's an important consideration for me. Some of the data re: shops is poor but that's hardly any worse than Google which either doesn't provide it at all or places stuff somewhere other than one might expect.

5) Finally I have a map that when I click current location actually shows the corner where I live and labels the street name correctly. Put my address into Google Maps and it tells you I live around 400m from here well within an estate that I actually live on the entrance to. Amazingly poor from Google given that Street View shows my house right on that corner.

So, please define "disaster"!!!

Interested to read other comments on here.

Jamie - you will find it is excellent.

People who want a bigger screen - why? So you have to use 2 hands instead of 1? I'd say Apple have got this about right. It's bigger but very usable.

Bruce - you can make a case that many apps are a waste of space but then many are absolutely wonderful. This version of the iPhone on paper is nothing but an incremental refinement but it's an incremental refinement of an excellent product and in many respects - speed; weight etc. it's a huge improvement. Whether the other functions are what you need will very much depend on... what you need. The point is that it's sufficiently versatile to be whatever you want it to be.

Mine - I deal with email from 5 accounts (2 for work). I take great photos and HD video of family stuff without ever needing to carry around another device (although the Flip adds another hour to any video). I can edit and circulate those photos on the phone and do it immediately without having to tediously sit at a PC once I'm back off a holiday for example. I can manage and update 4 blogs (1 for work). I tweet. I can escalate a complaint about a service before I've even left the building. I can download and watch films and TV for when I'm away from home. I can handle Word and Excel documents. I neither need nor like Siri. I have limited use for iCloud but it's hard to make a case that there's anything better out there.

Ooh, "it doesn't have Flash" seems a laughably redundant argument now. It was mostly advanced by people who didn't know about the security and stability issues or indeed know that HTML 5 was out there. Cannot remember more than 3 occasions in 4 years where I've used a site where it was an issue.

Svetty - Interesting sentiment but, IMHO, a little misguided. Buy the product that does the job. Your principles are being undone as I type this. Many people use Android because it's Google and therefore perceived as a steady, reliable thing, when in fact it's more true to say that people are committing to Android phones only to find an incompatibility that prevents them upgrading to the latest version. Putting aside the annoyance value of that there's also fundamental security issues. Using IE6 when IE9 is out there is admirable on some levels but a bit dumb if you want to protect your PC. Similarly, there are problems with the products in the Android app marketplace in terms of a lack of protection against malware etc. that simply don't occur on the same level with Apple. Equally, generally Android apps are not of the same quality as those in the Apple App Store. In part this is the relative lack of quality control but it's also down to an expectation around so called open source software and free stuff. Developers may feel ripped off by Apple perhaps but at least Apple users have an expectation of a fair price for a good product. You ultimately get what you ask for.

A number of people have bought Android because of the open source thing. A point of principle if you like. Kind of falls to pieces amid rumours that because of the problems people have upgrading their OS and the lack of consistency Google has been having a quiet word and trying to persuade people to simplify matters. This ultimately leads to an OS managed by Google in the same way Apple control theirs. Personally I have no problem with that. The consumer will win. Open source is an interesting concept but it's not standards driven and it's never quite what it seems.

OW - had done before I typed that. Some hilarous complaints but even the most serious ones start from an assumption that these things were right in Google Maps when they plainly weren't. Just like GM it's a work in progress. No doubt a GM app will follow for those who really can't find their own way home!

Mike Hughes,

Apple - expect better;  hopefully they won't laugh it off.

I don't know why you'd expect better. Everyone does things incrementally. First iPhone didn't have 3G. It was the fourth iteration before it had a camera worth talking about. Didn't even have one facing both ways until the 4. Look how long it took to get basic cut and paste... and so on. Maps is not what it could be. I'm still waiting for Google Maps to be accurate after all these years. Nothing there that's a deal breaker.

'Addition' is one thing, 'replacement' another.

Deal breaker; maybe not for you, for others, installation can wait.

Richard, Please explain why, after all these years, anyone would use Carphone Warehouse after all that we know? You'll gather my sympathy is limited Mike

Hi Mike Utility warehouse!

Posted on: 20 September 2012 by Mike Hughes
Sorry. Ironic that I misread it on an iPhone. Clearly I need a new one
