High Res and Synology NAS - help please
Posted by: Goon525 on 22 September 2012
I've been away for a week, and shortly before I went I made some major changes to set-up, including updating the software on my SU and nStream. But I also moved my Synology NAS down to be colocated with the SU, thus getting rid of the Internet over mains connection much hated by senior contributors here.
But the oddest thing has happened. Whenever I play something I know to be high res via UPnP it is now reported as being CD quality ie 1411 kb/s44.1kHz. This didn't happen before, and I'm not aware of having changed any settings on the NAS. If I play high res stuff through a USB stick, the resolution is correctly reported. Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks
Paul
Sorry I've taken so long, I'vie only just spotted your question. I have moved the router, AirPort Extreme, Synology box so they're all on the same rack as the SU, and wired connections are a piece of cake. As someone else has pointed out, the NAS (which is also backing up my iMac) is not quite 100% silent, but it is quiet enough not to bother me, and I listen mainly to classical.
Do you mean sound quality? If so, not very much to say. I couldn't reliably get 192/24 over wifi, but this, and everything else, works fine over Ethernet. I haven't done a proper A v B of wired v wifi, but I know there are others here who are very anti Internet over mains, which I was using before the switch.
Hi. I don't have a naim streamer so can't confirm if there has actually been a change but when I updated media server on my Synology NAS today I noticed a new option saying "Downsample audio files during transcoding to provide better DMA compatibility" in the Audio transcoding options. Don't think it was there previously.
Presumably leaving this unticked fixes the Hires problem when transcoding to WAV?
John
Bit of a "bump" on Johnnymo's post, has anyone been able to confirm or deny this new option?

Just tried this, makes no difference, media server still down samples to 16/48 from 24/48.
Well updated my nas over the weekend to see if i can get DSM 4.2 to work. Alas no its still broken. You either get no audio at all or its downsampled to 16/44.1.
Oh well back to DSM 3.2. Id be happy to leave it at 3.2 but i cant seem to get the album art work to come through in normal res, its always sent to the ipad in low res. All other versions of DSM work fine with this.
Does anyone else have this issue. Its the sound that counts but id like nice pics too if possible

Thanks for trying this Rich..... hope they will/may sort this out eventually.

Foxman50, as I have mentioned above, shame they won't fix this.Glad 3.2 is, just about, working for you.
Dear "Rich27" and "RexManning",
You guys deserve a medal, since you solved an issue which neither Naim (Mr. Phil Harris), Dutch importer Latham nor my Naim dealer could solve!
I use the Naim NAC-N 172XS, n-stream version 3.2 on an iPad, a Synology DS112 NAS with DSM4.1 software and JRiver MediaPlayer18 on a Windows 7 PC.
I had the same issue as Goon525: The 96 kHz High Resolution FLAC files bought from Highresaudio.com were displayed as 44.1 kHz files on n-stream, and the reason was unclear.
And now after reading this post,I simply unticked the box "Enable Transcoders" ("Transcoders inschakelen" in Dutch). Just to be sure I rebooted the NAS and the 172 and it all works!
Thanks folks, I will inform Naim and the dealer so they can help other customers as well.
Best regards,
a happy Naimer,
Bert
The issue seems to be fixed on DSM5 software. I gave it a short try and it seems to work, but I will stay with Minimserver to which I switched due to the transcode bug.

Hi Volker
Are you saying that DSM 5 now transcodes hi res 24/96 and 24/192 flac to wav and it stays at full resolution and not downsampled to 16/44.1
Graeme
I use Minimserver on my Synology DSM NAS and it transcodes FLAC to WAV at hi res perfectly. It's fiddly to set up but faultless once running I recommend it.

Hi Solid
I run the same, but curious to know if "Media Server" is fixed
Graeme
Hi Graeme,
that's what I wanted to say
