Apple airport extreme with external hdd + superuniti

Posted by: RvanderHolst on 22 September 2012

Dear all, i'm new to this forum, but since today i am the oroud owner of a superuniti. I have traded in my CD5i and my Nait5 amplifier to go fully digital with the superuniti (with my Totem "hawk" speakers). I will get my superuniti next week.

i was wondering if the superuniti would recognise my external hard drive connected to my apple airport extreme. Apple is not supporting UpNp, but has it' s own nat- pmp system.

will it work or do i have to something extra like settings, port forwarding or change to a nas...

thanks for the help!

Hi there.

The SuperUniti picks up UPNP servers, the airport is not such a device and there fore it will not work regardless of what you do with ports,

However you could install a UPNP server on your mac/PC to utlise the tracks on your airport. A word of warning though, this is network intensive and ultimately your best bet is to get a NAS.

Thanks for the reply. Will the superuniti see my itunes library on my mac? Again on the same apple extreme network?

one other question, where is te bestbplace to download 24 khz cd's?

Dear garyi,

Thanks for your reply above.

question on NAS usage. Would a simple solution like the Synology USB Station 2 (with my existing external HDD attached), plugged into my Airport Extreme work as a solution?

I have UPC internet, so i need the UPC modem, but for my network at home, the AE works better in terms of reach. So if i put the Synology USB Station 2 in the AE network, would my SuperUniti see the files on my external HDD or should i put the synology in front of the connection of the AE...

so my internet signal goes like this

Option 1: UPC (Wifi turned off) --> AE (wifi on) -->  Synology USB Station 2

Option 2: UPC (Wifi turned off) --> AE (wifi on)

          --> Synology USB Station 2

To which network would i connect my SuperUniti?

Sorry for these questions but new to NAS and streaming..... (and don't want to get rid of my reliable AE)

Anyone has suggestions?

Almost 5 months downnthe line now. Superbly happy with my superuniti. Since yesterday i figured out the streaming via upnp.

here is my solution.

upc thomson router, airport extreme in bridge modus providing excellent wifi signal with almost no wifi down time. superuniti and ipad on wifi signal of airport extreme. Connected a western digital live book to the upc router. Superuniti picks up the signal and streams like a beuaty over wifi.... Even hd tracks.

happy!

A lot of routers come with upnp servers now which provides a great solution for sure.

Yes, but the problem remains with apple not supporting upnp, never thought the solution would be so simple... As i am not a network expert...

Its not really down to apple to support a microsoft standard is it? They have their own thing. iTunes is a turd on a stick anyway, I wouldn't want it in any part of my audio chain.
