Quiet JAZZ recommendations

Posted by: Thorsten_L on 25 September 2012

Hi @all!

I would love to hear some awesome recommendations for some "mellow/quiet/relaxed/cool" - jazz (non-vocal) albums (trumpet or sax)...something like Miles Davis´ song "Kind of blue" or "Autumn leaves"...

Thank you...

Hi Thorsten,

I trust you're keeping well. You've been quiet on the forum lately.

Two classic Blue Note albums

 Just magical.

Also known as 'Kind of Blue 2'.

The list is too long but other recommendations are Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Grant Green, Hank Mobley..........

Saxophone Collossus - Sonny Rollins

Coltrane - Ballads

As recommended by Marley earlier, Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is superb, in fact it's my favourite jazz album. Try Blue Serge by Serge Chaloff, baritone sax and very cool. Then there is Anniversary by Stan Getz, in fact nearly everything by Stan is superb.

Hi Thortsen -

Here's a couple more...

Bill Frisell - Bill Frissell with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones

Chris Potter - Transatlantic

Both are prolific artists, and lots of their other CDs are equally brilliant.  And one more...

The Bad Plus - For All I Care

Saw these guys a couple of years ago -- a local trio that now tours nationally. This album of theirs features a number of surprisingly effective jazz covers of downbeat rock classics (e.g., it opens with Nirvana's "Lithium", followed by Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb").  Sacrilege!

Have fun.

Very quiet and chilled late night fodder:

Pat Metheny - One Quiet night

Martin Taylor - Artistry

Paolo Fresu, Richard Galliano, Jan Lundgren - Mare Nostrum

David Newton - Victim of Circumstance

Chris Botti - Midnight Without You

Earl Klugh - Night Songs

Nat King Cole - Love Is The Thing or The Very Thought Of You - I prefer the first of those

Fred Simon - Dreamhouse

Global Communication - 76:14 - Chilled Electronica

Eno Moebius Roedelius - After the Heat - well, maybe not jazz since it's kind of electronica but it's chilled

Not quite so chilled but pretty chilled all the same:

Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue

Chirs Botti - First Wish

Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train

Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba

Philippe Saisse - Valerian or Masques or Next Voyage - good luck with finding these!

Tommy Emmanuel - Only

Acoustic Alchemy - Back on the case

Antonio Forcione - Dedicato or Live or Touch Wood

Ben Webster & Oscar Peterson - Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson

Oscar Person Trio - We Get Requests

Doc Powell - The Doctor

Jim Lampi - Greazy

Larry Carlton - Sleepwalk

Bill Evans Trio - Waltz For Debby or Live at the Village Vanguard or Portrait in Jazz

Billie Holiday - Songs for Distingue' lovers

Jan Lundgren - Magnum Mysterium - this is choral with piano and cello jazz licks in it so approach with caution, but I find it beautiful

Not Jazz but chilled:

Ray LaMontagne - Till The Sun Turns Black

Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me or Not Too Late

Ludovico Einaudi - Le Onde or Una Mattina or Eden Roc

Suzanne Ciani - Seven Waves or Neverland or History Of My Heart or Pianissimo (for piano solo versions of other albums)

Andreas Vollenweider - The Trilogy

That should do for starters...

Regards,
Frank.
