HDX can't get online

Posted by: andrew jameson on 27 September 2012

Have just got my HDX back from the factory after a hard disk / RAM / PCI upgrade (running 1.6c btw) and we (i.e dealer and i) just can't get it to connect to the web - so no internet radio or online track data available.

All other devices connected (or via wifi) to the router work fine and my laptop can see (and control the HDX) - weird! My dealer took the player home and confirms that all was well on his network.

I've tried changing the ethernet cable, restarting router and HDX endlessly and in different orders but to no avail. Does anyone have any bright ideas? Dealer view was that i should try another router but i'm not totally convinced given that everything else seems to connect OK

Ideas??

Did the HDX work with this router before you sent it in for upgrading?  Can you access the HDX from your computer on your network?

No it was playing up before the upgrade to be honest (i just thought that the player was misbehaving because the HD was full to the brim)

Yes i can access and control the player from my laptop no problem

The dealer should do a home visit and help set it up for you

If I have this issue, then a reboot of the router normally fixes it. Is it possible you have an IP address conflict?

No he absolutely did try and install it, then took it away to confirm that it was functioning correctly, then had another go - he's also called Naim to see if they have any ideas. So a total of 4 hours now spent trying to get it online!

I asked him to leave it with me for a couple of weeks as he's due to come back anyway - I thought that I might be able to work it out ... I might sub in another router to see if that does the trick but if it doesn't then i'm not sure what to do!

If any Naim mods are watching ... do you have any ideas?

Don't think so but i'll check ... I have re-booted the router about 100 times!

If you can control the HDX from your laptop the the LAN section of your router is working.  And if your other components can access the internet, the WAN side of your router is working.  Sounds like a setup isue (either in the router or the HDX).  Alternatively, the software update could have got corrupted.

If you can access via lan, then its probably a DNS issue.

Did you set these manually?

What is your router?

Can you see the hdx is the list of connected devices in the router interface?

Have you tried to shut down both the hdx and the router, disconnect power and lan cable on the hdx, wait 10 minutes start the router wait until the pcs are online, connect the lan cable important that you do it first, then turn on the hdx.

Even a hard reset of the router could be an option, of course knowing that you lose all manually configured router settings.

I'm with garyi on this - if local devices can see and control the HDX, but it cannot access and Internet sites it sounds like a name resolution issue. Is it configured to use DHCP to get it IP configuration or manually set up? It's possibly the factory set it up differently say using the usual private address range 192.168.0.x with a fixed IP that happens not to conflict with anything else, but a different DNS server.

Andrew,

What router do you use?

If its BT or even another make? get a switch, plug that into your router and your HDX into the switch.
