The Naim Planet?

Posted by: PinkHamster on 03 October 2012

I am beginning to wonder, which kind of species on which planet Naim is trying to server with their streaming products. The issues we can read about on this forum are so out of this world, that they have never been heard of before:

Incomatibility with UPnP

Incompatibility with routers

Incompatibility with USB pen drives

These are just plain stupid issues, which one simply does not encounter with other everyday products. Have you ever heard of a laptop that was picky regarding the router? Ridiculous!

I was about to buy a SU. But I will not buy another Naim product until I can stop readind about such silly and yet major malfunctions.

I have been streaming with the NDX for over a year and serving with the Unitiserve and have had none of the problems you mention.

Well, I am glad that you are not having any problems. But if you read the posting of the last couple of days only, there are obviously people with different experiences.

Ditto that Ray no such problems with my systems. Streaming was the best HiFi move I made.

I'd tend to go with Mr Pink here.

Streaming is a bag of nails. What UpNP works, artwork, and then the dumb decision from Naim to make all their control apps iPhone/iPad only and then restrict the updates of the equipment to Windows only.

Now, there are any number of explanations for this - all quite rational.

But for an outsider - it's dumb.

n-stream is only available for iOS? Well that's it then for Naim.

I'll look around elsewhere.

IMHO if you come to a manufacturer's message board, you will read many orders of magnitude more posts about "problems" than about how everything works just fine.  Few come out of the woodwork as customers to post that everything works fine.

You may well be served better by something different; good luck in your search!

Indeed, I am already looking towards an Audionet DNA.  A completely different leage to The SU anyway.

Yup a totally different approach!  The antithesis of flat earth (??).

You'd never buy a Land Rover if you looked at message boards for them.  That's a bad example, actually cos I did buy a Land Rover and it was every bit as unreliable as the boards said...

I've been driving a 1999 Defender 110 HT for 10 years ..... when I was younger and flexible enough to crawl under the car and take care of the many little glitches.

Pink…… Frankly most of your criticism can by filed in the ‘User Error’ file. In 2years of streaming with Naim I have not encountered any UPnP incompatibility errors with either of our units.

You do not have to be a genius to set up a small network but you may require a little help. Your dealer should be your first port of call and there is plenty of help here on the forum. Also, Naim have and will help with such issues, you only have to ask.

USB sticks, well I have one here that won’t work in one of our laptops, I guess there are USB sticks and USB sticks; my point is Naim aren’t alone in having small incompatibilities usually with c***p kit.

Why don’t you ask your dealer for a home demo and try it yourself? You may well find it just works for you, as I would suggest it does for the vast majority of purchasers.

The best thing about the Defender is you can build a new one from spare parts for just a few quid – unless things have changed.

Peter,

thank you for giving me confidence. I am well aware of the user-error-factor and its effect on user forums. A home demo would be a prerequisite for the purchase. But I am still tempted by the Audionet alternative, even though it is double as pricey - but also a lot more powerfull in the amp section.

Well you need to listen carefully to both surely, for peace of mind if nothing else.

I guess we are die-hard Naim devotees; if it doesn’t have that badge on the front it won’t get a look-in.

Good luck with your choice, I’m sure you will make the right decision.

No matter what brand you ultimately choose to purchase, you will encounter tales of "silly yet major malfunctions" should you choose to log into user forums discussing streaming audio. You should be cognisant of the fact that tales of woe will greatly outnumber those of joy on these forums, as humans, (especially humans with too much time on their hands) love to have a whinge in public - Especially when computers are involved.

As others have already stated, the vast majority enjoy streaming solutions with none of the issues you mention and view streaming as the best Hi Fi move they have ever made.  Bottom line is  - hardwire via a switch into router and you should have no problems.

I feel compelled to point out that not only does the SU sound bloody marvellous, but Naim's tech support is superb and should not be overlooked. They will help you if you have problems......

I've used a ND5XS, a SuperUniti and an NDX. No issues whatsoever.

Posted on: 03 October 2012 by McGhie
I use a NaimUniti and a SuperUniti on a daily basis - I've had the former for 21 months and the latter for 9 - and I have had none of these so called issues. I did read the posting the other day about the SU being incompatible with UPnP and with some router or other and I nearly fell off my chair laughing at how ridiculous these completely unsubstantiated statements were - basically blaming their LAN and broadband issues on a hi-fi box. I am sure that there are some genuine challenges out there for the unfortunate few (not everyone finds diagnosing and resolving network issues simple - and there's a multitude of variables, including UPnP streamer, NAS/server/PC, network hardware, network topology, cabling, router configuration to name but a few) but in most cases the issue seems to be down to something other than the Naim equipment, and many people have had their issues resolved by the patience and kindness of others on this forum, advising them on how to identify the source of the issue and then alternatives for resolving it, Cheers Ian

Part of the issue, IMHO: Folks are fine spending $6K on the SU, and $500 on the Naca5, but then want to scrimp and save when it comes to the router and the NAS.

I'm not saying you need to go get the UnitiServ.

I've got the airport express, and the synology NAS. 0 issues.

Posted on: 03 October 2012 by MangoMonkey

Maybe NAIM should simply 'certify' and 'support' the Airport Extreme router.
