Mark Knopfler concert in seattle anyone?

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 05 October 2012

I would rather it be just him rather than with Bob Dylan, but oh well.

Can someone recommend any Bob Dylan stuff that I can listen to before the concert. Don't want to piss him off by leaving once Mark's concert is over.

I made a long journey to Nottingham (I live in Surrey) to see Mark and Bob a year ago (I was going away and couldn't make the RAH dates). Mark was his usual self, perhaps not the most inspiring I've seen him, but reliably good. Bob's band were deafeningly loud (take ear-plugs!) and he was abusing what's left of his voice to the point that the experience was not particularly pleasant. I'm not a great Bob fan, but I know the viewing I'm expressing here was shared by a lot of MK fans.

MM - I don't know what Bob plays these days, but try Highway 61 Revisited and Blood On The Tracks as these are two of the greatest records ever made. I'm a huge fan of Bob's work up to about 1978 when I kind of lost track. I'm not a MK fan at all, but hope you enjoy the concert.

I would recommend this.

MM.

Tempest would be choice as its his latest album.

Buy the double vinyl ,the CD comes with it.

IMO Its the best album he has done for years.

+1 to what Guy said above.

Blood on the tracks is my all time fav Dylan album and a must have in any record collection.

Hi!

Stu is right get his latest album as this Is more like how he will sound these days with his band.

And whilst he plays from his extensive back catalog he rarely, if ever plays, it the same..which is great for his fans but sometimes difficult for others.

And well worth staying to see Bob as he is a legend in my opinion!

Blood on the Tracks is also my favourite if only for the fact that every track is so good. Other than that Highway 51 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde are very high up there and also the first 3 albums for what they stood for. For me 'Masters of War' is the most powerful anti-war protest song bar none.

I've seen Bob a number of times over the years, the best at Earls Court, I think around 1975, just after Blood on the tracks.

His voice ain't what it used to be but I do like this new album.

Guido, you are pretty darned near spot on. I would add 'Desire'. I also have a bit of a soft spot for his unusual 'Good As I've Been To You'.

To me, post 1980 is difficult, don't like very much but certainly not rubbish .

Can't get on with very modern Bob, I'm afraid.

Absolutely true. Even changing tracks to reggae style versions occasionally if my memory serves me well. Great for us Bob lovers, but frustrating for 'beginners'.

Thanks !

Tempest is on order now as are Blood on the tracks and highway 61 revisited.

I have an opportunity to go to Santa Barbara County bowl to hear them Oct 22, must make a decision soon. I certainly don't want to see him down here in LA, the crowd and probably double the cost. I've never seen him, tho when I bought Tempest, which I really like, also bought the first 'Basement Tapes' and "Oh Mercy".  I really like his later work like Modern Times, his voice is ragged, not for beginners, but he's doing an incredible job late career with what I call Roadhouse Music. He's traveled all over and has great backing bands, I've noticed Hidalgo from Los Lobos is a regular now. It's really an authentic western sound that I really like.

I like Knopfler but he has become  a snooze for me.

You won't regret it ... two classics

I must investigate some of Bob's post 1980 work so this thread has been really useful.

yeah I really liked Blood On The Tracks also and have a good copy of Blonde on Blonde.  Some amazing songs esp, Brand New Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat.  I always think of him being enigmatic but dropping things in of his life.

Mark was great as expected.

Listening to Bob became a chore after a while. i wasn't familiar with any of the music, all the music started to sound the same after a while and I couldn't understand a word he was saying. I left mid concert, as did many others.

Having said that, watching a 70+ old person rock out on the stage was still inspirational. Hats off to him for that. If you're a Bob fan, much recommended.... I guess...

Perhaps Bob's too old to rock and roll and too young to die, but his legacy of great songs is equalled by very few ....
