Streaming drop-outs on Uniti

Posted by: ChrisH on 11 October 2012

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this question, but I have no idea!

Tonight I was having trouble streaming iRadio through my Uniti (the buffer drops from 100% down to 0% Stream cuts out and then after a time will buffer back up to 100%starter commence playing) so decided to switch over to Upnp with the Unitiserve.

Hey presto! No buffer loss / drop outs.

Why would  I experience drop outs with iRadio but not with Unitiserve?

I did complain to BT about the wireless issues I seem to have been having recently and they are sending me a Homehub 3, but I don't understand why US doesn't seem to suffer in the same way as iRadio (or streaming to TV).

Thanks for any ideas you may have!

Dear Chrish,

For my Uniti passed the same with e.g. Radio 4 in the Netherlands but BBC3 as well.

I noticed that the Radio internet broadcast is not stabile since i installed the upgrade for the software.

I tried reset on factory setting but didn't help.

Did you inform NAim Support talready

Hi marinus,

I did make the software upgrade but hadn't really put the iRadio issue together with that as a possible cause.

Did you contact Support and has the problem been resolved?

I haven't made contact with them yet as I only really noticed tonight that US was working fine but not iRadio, even though iRadio has been a bit 'dodgy' for a few weeks now.

Chris: you might want to take a look at the thread I started this morning on HiFi Corner, about losing connectivity completely to iRadio on my Superuniti.  Another owner said he had had the same problem.  UPnP worked fine for him--(I am not using it).  I won't go into the whole can of beans here, but I solved the problem by switching the SU off and on.

Thanks Russ, I will try that out also. And check your previous thread too!

The forum is a mine of information!

its my plan to hard wire from the router to Uniti at some stage, but it's a bit of a complicated routing and some flooring is fixed down on the route, meaning access to the floorboards is a bit difficult at the moment.

I will definitely do it though as I'm sure any such issues will disappear once that is done.

If you are capturing iradio and then streaming via upnp without problems that is puzzling but if you are comparing iradio with streaming your own music from a server on your network then the iradio dropouts are down to your isp and poor internet service. I have problems with dropouts on iradio at around 4-6pm when I assume people's kids get home from school and start hammering Facebook etc. It doesn't happen in school holidays. Also an internet speedcheck shows no difference in download bandwidth but the dropouts are as predictable as a wet English summer.

Yes, I got the same results as you on the SpeedChecker Pev - no difference before and after.

Butthe drop outs that prompted me to post yesterday were occurring at approx. 2000hrs, which is an unusual time relative to high broadband usage in the area.

I blamed BT and their Homehub2 malfunctioning with wireless strength.

A poster a while ago had mentioned an issue with HH2, so it was an option I thought I should try.

They are sending a HH3, so I will see if this makes any difference and post back on the result.

I think you are on the right track by replacing your router. I had frequent iRadio dropouts with a Thompson router supplied by O2 here in the UK but switching to another solved the issue. I then changed my ISP to BT and they supplied HomeHub 3. No problems with dropouts but I did have problems in not being able to connect first time " No Network, press List etc" ( I do not leave my Uniti switched on the whole time). In the end, out of sheer frustration, I bought an Apple AirPort Extreme and have been problem free since. I hope the HH3 solves your problem.

Well, got the HH3 yesterday, swapped it out with the old one, hooked the Uniti up to the network, and within 10 minutes Radio Paradise ( I tried 320k and then dropped down to 192k) was dropping out on wireless connection.

Hmmm.

Thought that was going to solve the problem.

Ill perhaps drop Naim Support a line next week.

Thanks for your input so far though chaps.
