Ray Charles' recordings

Posted by: DanailT on 18 October 2012

Dear Gentlemen,

I would be grateful if you can point out some well executed recordings of Ray Charles' albums. Nowadays there are plenty of known and unknown labels issuing his work that I'm a bit confused.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

D,

Live in Newport is one of my favourites. Atlantic circa approx 1959. Genius + Soul = Jazz is also good.

Are we talking vinyl or cd. The career covering 3 cd boxed set is excellent.

This is an excellent sounding '62 mono vinyl.

Love his rendition of 'You don't know me'.

Rhino has put out a number of his records on vinyl and two very good cd sets, including one 5cd set of all the country and western music sessions. Which is a little misnamed as it includes CW sessions he did much much later than the one identified in Kuma's post! Excellent however. Most of the Atlantic stuff is worth a listen (not necessarily a purchase just a listen) but much of it very short which suggests they were cashing in on his ability to sell records at the time. Buy as you like!

Thanks guys! Excellent suggestions.

Keano, this box-set is definitely quite interesting. I've checked amazon and apparently there is a re-issue of this as of 2012, which is minus the DVD for a lot less money. The thing that bothers me is that it says "remastered" for the new version, which is... hmmm not always a good thing.

Somebody with experience of the new Pure Genius CD box-set?

Cheers!

I liked the Rhino set but can't say I was that taken with the remastering. Interestingly all reviews I can find take it as a given that it's better. To these ears it was not. The set I was thinking of was "The Birth of Soul" 3 cd set. Much better when compared side by side sound quality wise. Much more natural.

look out for the Steve Hoffman mastered work.  You can find a list on his forum site.

Thank you guys fot the suggestions. I've received the Pure Genious CD box-set, now listening to the fourth CD - so far so good. I'm happy with it:-)

Waiting for the CD with Steve Hoffman remaster works. Will report later on it.
