Am confused by HDX nDAC, do they fit in?

Is NDS/UnitiServe the best way to do this?

No they don't need to fit in, although if you really are thinking of spending this kind of money, I have no doubt a dealer would be happy to assist!

The nDAC doesn't fit in at all. The HDX could supplant the Unitiserve but I can't think of a logical reason why it should.

Whats an NS01?

Money is an object.

System was  bought 7 years ago with lump sum on medical retirement

Now that money is spent I am obliged to live on my pension which is a constraint.

Bought the UnitiServe and a another Fraim rack second hand

Car cost 3k and I don't live the high life.

No mortgage.

NS01 is the home network version of a server.

If money is an issue, then skip the US and HDX topic in total and get a QNAP NAS. The NDS won't know the difference.

Seeing that you already have the UnitiServe, you could stay with it as a very good UPnP server. Or you could convert it to cash and buy a NAS, as suggested above, which will do a fine job, but will require a bit more work on your part.

The NDS is a network player (or should I say THE network player), meaning it contains a streaming client (the receiver for the music data coming through the network) and a digital to analog converter. All you need to feed it music data is a UPnP server (such as a network-attached storage device (NAS)) and a router or network switch. There are many ways to get your music onto the NAS, as a bit of searching here will show.

From cheapest to most expensive solutions : NAS, UnitiServe, NS01, NDX. The latter two are overkill in this case, as they both contain a DAC and an analogue output section that you won't need. The UnitiServe will do all the ripping and cataloguing for you, but at a price that is hard to justify if you are using it simply as a network (UPnP) server.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Can't understand why nobody has suggested the obvious, since the OP states he's ripping his CDs - ditch the CD555 and use 2 x 555 PSUs on the NDS.

Rip your CDs to NAS and away you go!

Exactly. Or he uses the UServe.

Naim 500 series  for CD playback is the best. Of at least it was when I bought it
DR for PS for 552 and 555
2x 555PS to the CS55
Both of these developments are accepted as marked Improvements.
So that's my CD555 based set-up sorted.
Had second  used  555PS [not DR] working for a month  and there is no doubt about it - the sound is better- though describing exactly how it's better Is difficult
The suggestion that I dump the CD555 cannibalise its PS and Burgundy is for the NDS is not an option.  On my dealers say so I lost all perspective and  almost sold the-CD555.  I do not intend to repeat such a folly. The CD555 is unsurpassed and until it is surpassed I will be keeping mine.
A second system in parallel is proposed because of its convenience of use, remote track selection,, backing up my Cd collection. creating playlists, building a library of high - resolution digital downloads. This mode is  in its infancy its also the future . Though CDs will not die they may no longer reproduce so will fade away slowly leaving a robust second hand market. Most of my recent CDs were bought used or from specialists. The number and range of  high res may be limited at present but there are a some I will be buying and it's exciting to be able to take advantage of the developments as they occur. I am not going to do this all at once but in stages so that there is plenty of time to listen and feel any change with each step up. First was the second 555PS [non DR] and I am very happy with that. Second will be the DR and service for my two 555PS

I certainly understand not wanting to give up the cd player.  I listen to over 90% of my music from a server here at home, but kept the cd player and am happy I did.  Happy at times like this where my server is out for upgrading and at least I can still listen to cd's. Otherwise I would be music-less.  And when my 555PS goes out for DR upgrade, again I'll have the cd player so I can listen to music (as the NDS with no power supply will be useless).

The least expensive solution is to feed the NDS from a NAS, and use a computer to rip cd's and move the files to the NAS on your home network, and to download hi res files and move them to the NAS.
