NDX and US-SSD - different connection speeds?

Posted by: GeeJay on 21 October 2012

Noticed on either of my Netgear switches (GS-116E and GS-105) that the NDX lights up both green LED lights on the switch port (1000Mb/s), whereas the US-SSD only lights up the right hand light (100Mb/s).  No matter which switch, ports or cable combination I use, I always observe the same thing (NDX at 1000Mb/s and US-SSD at 100Mb/s).

Does thIs mean that the NDX has a gigabit ethernet connection, whilst the US-SSD does not?

Whilst it shouldn't matter, I did observe som buffering issues yesterday when I played a 24/192 version of REM's Murmur, whilst simultaneously ripping CDs on the US-SSD.  Having said that, I couldn't replicate this problem again today.

I appreciate the NDX is a streamer and the US-SSD is a server, however would be interested to understand a little more on the connection speed observations, and whether this is normal behaviour for the US-SSD.

Main thing is that the music is still sweet and totally enjoyable, however I do find these things interesting!

George, simultaneous playing and ripping on the uServe is not 100% reliable -- you can expect some dropouts if doing that.

Thanks Bart, and I appreciate I'm pushing it with streaming Hi-Res music (whilst ripping CDs simultaneously).

I'm coming to the end of the re-rip of my 1200 CDs, so the problem will soon go away, however, I wonder what the rate limiting factor is here, and whether the observed 100Mb/s speed (which would indicate lack of gigabit port?), is a contributing factor?  After all, my PC allows simultaneous streaming to other DNLA devices in the house, whilst ripping CDs, with no issues.

My Superuniti certainly only has 100mb connection (which I'm told is way more than enough even for the highest of high res) but maybe the NDX is different.

Thanks jobseeker.

Interesting to hear.  It may well be that the Uniti series has 100Mb/s, but that the streamers have higher.  Puts my mind at ease that my US probably isn't 'misbehaving'.

Interested in what othe Forum members observe.....

24k x 192b = 4(ish) Mb/s

Networking at 100 MB, let alone GB, has plenty of capacity. Issues lie elsewhere.
