Guitar signature protection
Posted by: Siobhaaan! on 21 October 2012
Hi guys, recently went to see slash and mark Tremonti and was lucky enough to get my Tremonti signature PRS signed by them both. Was wondering if anyone's knows any safe ways to protect the signatures without anything reacting with my guitar? Thanks!

ask a guitar tech. I'm sure there's some sort of lacquer that they use in restoring guitars, probably what was used for the original finish.

You're so lucky, I've been listening to All I Was throughout last week and watching Alter Bridge at Wembley DVD, never thought there would be other fans around these parts.
Also you should take a number of photographs of your guitar including some pictures with yourself holding it, just in case your guitar gets nicked.

Was amazing meeting them! So down to earth! I'm a massive alter bridge/Tremonti fan!
Don't worry, I have millions of pictures of the guitar and me with it. For it insured aswell! Can never be to safe!

This might be a bit obvious, but the first place I would ask is at PRS. Surely they would know the most about the finish on the guitar.
(For me, the guitar would be better without having been defaced, but each to their own, eh?)

I asked on the PRS forums and no one had a clue. Phones then and try said it would be a while effort they got back to me and I wanna protect it before it rubs off! Also, when you get someone's signature guitar it kinda completes it if it is actually signed by that person! In my opinion anyway!

You cant just cover that with just any varnish, It will just blur/smug it.
You need to coat it with something like Humbrol Dope then you can varnish over it.
I found this trick out years ago when i used to build carbon and split cane fishing rods.
I used to use gold and silver pens to sign my name and the varnish just used to melt it.
If you use Dope first its job done.
