Integrating 252/250 with Sony AV amp

Posted by: Shropshire Hills on 23 October 2012

WIth my previous Nait XS the supplied manual explained how to connect an AV amp to it so that the Nait powered the speakers in stereo mode playing cds and also powered the 2 front channels when the AV amp took over for TV, blue ray player etc.  I have now upgraded to a 252/250 combination and the supplied manuals make no mention of unity gain or AV connections although I think I have finally found the information under "Old Products" on the Naim website!

Just to be certain could somebody with more knowledge than me confirm that I need a 2 RCA (AV amp) to 5 pin 180 Din (252) interconnect so that when I select the AV input the AV amp sends the signal for the 2 front channels to the 252/250.  I have re-sited the hifi rack and so need about 8 metres of cable.

Thanks

Bob,

I had this very same combination several years ago. I'm sure my 252 manual explained about unity gain though. The memory is a little faded now but yes you are right in your cable connections. I also needed to use a long cable around 8m in length and it needed to have a resistor fitted inside the DIN plug because of this. Intuitively this seems wrong (adding a resistor) but my dealer was advised by Naim and it worked fine.

I suggest that you get your dealer to make up the lead for you and get them to discuss the long length issue with Naim.

The older manuals do explain it but the new ones cover all the pre, power and integrated amps together with the power supplies in several languages but less detail than earlier ones.

Thanks for the top about the resistor - I'll contact Naim tomorrow for advice as I need 7/8 metres.

When I moved my AV2 away from the stereo rack, i needed a 6m interconnect into my pre-amp. My first lead (without resistors) created a loud hum. I had resistors inserted and it cured the problem.

Having said that, at the moment I have a 5pin Din to RCA interconnect into a Unitiqute (whilst my 552Ps is in for the DR treatment) this is 8 m long and has no resistors but works fine.

Is it hard to add resistors later?  If not I will try without first and see whether there any humming problems - I already have an audible background hum but its not particularly noticeable

Bob,

The resistor in my lead was soldered onto one of the DIN plug internal connections and the wire soldered onto the resistor. Adding a resistor later would mean de-soldering the wire from the DIN plug, inserting a resistor and re-soldering. Not sure whether this would mess up the DIN plug and may require a new one.

Thanks again.

Before ordering the cable I emailed Naim Customer Support and they recommended a padding resistor on an 8 meter lead so I have just ordered one now from a well-known cable supplier and it should be with me tomorrow. Thanks to all and I look forward to some good AV sound
