News reports are suggesting that the windows 8 is designed for tablets as well as pc's. So the use of iPad type kit with windows 8?

Posted on: 25 October 2012 by jobseeker

... And phones

Phew, that was close to thought everyone would jump on me...do it...don't do it!

Windows 8 .. every product they have brought out with an even version number has been a disaster, I can't believe anybody wants it.

Get an iPad or a Kindle - they just work - you know it makes sense,

MS have already launched their tablet . . . er . . . "Surface."  It does not run legacy Windows apps on that version of Windows 8 (Windows RT).  So I have no idea what it has to do with Naim.  I am 99.999999999% sure that the DTC will NOT run on it unless/until Naim (re)code it.

So yeah, I have no idea what it has to do with Naim.

Alas to run dtc you would have to jump into legacy windows, which will be neigh on impossible to use with yer fingers on an surface.

Even the new smaller iPad that came out this week works.

I must say i liked the look of the giant size TV touch screen MS used at the launch though.

It will be interesting to see the take up of there tablet world wide in the coming year.

Google have some stuff coming that looks interesting.

iPad 4 too and new Mac Mini .... the futures so bright and all that ...

This has a truly silky web browser - I think if you do have the misfortune to find your tablet is Windows 8 then you can just load the Kindle App on it and upgrade it to look and behave like the real thing. Or you can buy the real thing for much less. I just think Windows 8 is an irrelevance in the 21st century, but who knows stranger things have happened - Jose Mourinho is one of the candidates to replace Paul Jewel apparently - though I may have misheard - we want Sir Paul Mariner, of course.

Totally agree as to irrelevance - downloaded it Saturday, it will be off and back to 7 as soon as I get a chance. Fancy spending all that development money on what is basically a cover page.

It is currently £24.99 as a download from Microsoft until Jan 2103 if anyone wants to buy it. Cheap as chips. I have only heard good things about it from friends who have installed it onto their systems.

Just got it as a $39.99 download and am using it with parallels 8. Don't like it so far, but I'll probably get used to it. Can only run the Naim DTP in bridged network mode which is a bit annoying, but roll on the Mac version.

I thought it was cheap too, until I put it on and now I realise I've wasted my money. I thought it would be the answer to my Mac /OSX craving but alas, will need to save more pennies. Besides I want that ND 5XS first:-)

While I am an iphone/ipad user myself, at this rate Apple is doing things using a captive market approach, I am not entirely convinced Naim should chase this "fruit".

Their recent introduction of the lighting cable is one way Apple desire to control licensing with third party makers wanting to interface with their products.

Your point?

Posted on: 30 October 2012 by Poggy
I am reading the Steve Jobs book at the moment. It says that a primary reason Apple products are closed architecture is because Jobs believed in software and hardware working in unison. If you think about what software actually is, you can see his point. I'm not saying that for the good of innovation this is necessarily a good thing (it actually can be because it forces others to change) but the technical logic is sound. It's just a shame they don't pay more attention to engineering in products such as airport express but I guess they aim to hit a price point.

"Your point?"

Whilst hesitant to speak for someone else, I think he was referring to these issues:

"Lightning received mixed to negative reactions from press and users after the event, some praising its improved functionality, somewhat-improved throughput speed and smaller size compared to its predecessor, with others noting that nearly all accessories for previous iPod and iPhone products were rendered obsolete by the new connector. Apple has released an adapter that goes from Lightning to 30-pin, allowing some accessories to work with the 2012 devices. In addition, Apple received criticism for choosing to create a new proprietary connector instead of adopting the ubiquitous and standardised micro-usb connector.

In addition, the USB end of the connector is much smaller and security latches are deeper making it difficult to get a hold of it to separate it from the power plug or USB socket."

Guido, Sir Paul Mariner didn't help us down here in Plymuff much!

It was sad to see Plymouth drop in Sir Paul's short appointment, but he is a legend and I think had he been able to stay longer you'd have turned the corner ... I remember we used to wark a million miles for one of his goals ... looks like it is going be Michael Joseph McCarthy or Ian Holloway or George Burley ... they'd all be fine by me. Though I'd still go for Paul Mariner with John Wark as his assistant.  [I suppose John Beck is out of the question.

It means Microsoft has, after chasing the tablet bandwagon down the road for the last two years, dragged itself onboard with a revamp of it's long standing core product. I think although it's now on the bandwagon it's actually missed the bus.

I'm with you on that. My son's new laptop came loaded with it. After working with it for a couple of hours last night helping him get some programs ("apps"?) installed and tidying up all the pre-installed bloat-ware we could find, my reaction is...."What was the point?" It seems to just be an ugly, clumsy and overly complex cover sheet. Lots of things I don't want keep scrolling in from the four sides of the screen and just get in the way. I don't yet understand why they appear, but I did figure out how to get rid of them, until mousing over some seemingly random part of the screen makes them appear again. I just don't get it. An OS is surely just a way to load, launch, close and delete programs (now called "apps" for some reason) and to manage files. Anything else is surely pointless. KISS.

You sound like old people complaining about the new teas made being too complicated.

Yes its different to windows XP, get on board or be left behind, because they are not listening to you.

The slabs they have released look bloody awesome, and this comes from me, an apple fan bois to the end.
