Transferring files from QNAP NAS to PC problem.

Posted by: fatcat on 27 October 2012

I'm running an Windows XP PC and a QNAP NAS. The NAS is used as the PC backup and it runs a SQ Touch server. When I transfer files to the NAS I use a program called Netbak replicator, I am unable to to copy and paste or drop and drag.

My son's put files on the NAS which I wish to transfer to the PC, copy and paste or drop and drag won't work, neither does the Netbak Replicator.

Any suggestions.

A quick Google search tells me that Netbak Replicator is a backup utility.  I think you're going to have to read the manual and do a "restore" to get the files from the nas to the pc.  It's really not meant to be used as you're using it.

Something is wrong if you can't just drag and drop files to and from the nas, so you need to sort that out too.  Can you not get files to/from the nas either by treating the nas as an attached drive -or- by opening the web-based control panel for the nas and using the file move utility on it?

Thanks for the advise. I've tried using the multimedia station and the web file manager, but cant copy file to or from the NAS. I've never been able to do it, when I originally got the drive I reloaded the drivers and software and firmware in an attempt to solve the problem. Eventually I discovered Netbak Replicator which works fine, it's an excellent app.

I'll look into the attached drive suggestion tomorrow, I think the problem lies in the PC's settings. My son has a Mac, he's able to move files to and from the NAS with no problem. I need to use something called a QNAP finder to be able to view the NAP.

What happens when you try from your pc -- do you get a message saying you don't have permission?

use qnap finder to map a drive to the shared folder that way. I've got a qnap ts-210 and do it that way. Make sure the share permissions are set correctly on the folder first.

Hi fatcat

Firstly you need to check the permissions of the share where your files are stored.  Perform the following:

1)      Logon as admin via the logon page (http://<NAS NAME or IP ADDRESS)

2)      Go to the share management page (Access Right Management\Share Folders\<folder name>

3)      Select the Property page and ensure the following:

          Hide Network Drive = No

          Lock file (oplocks) = Yes

4)      Select the Permissions page and ensure the following:

          everyone - read/write Access

Guest Access Right = Full Access (THIS IS A CRITIAL SETTING, as you are not authenticating)

Then at this point you should be able to access the folder from your PC.  To do this, perform the following on your PC:

1)      Start\run

2)      Type in the run box “\\<nasname>”  (do not use quotes).

This should then display the shares available on your NAS, and by double clicking you should be able to access then.  Drag and drop should now work properly.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Thanks for the replies. I've managed it now by entering the NAS through My computer and My network places. Previously I'd been accessing the NAS using the NAS finder.
