Naim AV Newbie

Posted by: Foxman50 on 31 October 2012

Hi All

Ive recently been bitten by the Naim bug, very infectious it is too. Having just invested in an NDX and SPX, second hand, ive realised that i need something better than my Arcam AVR500 amp to hear the NDX at its full potential.

However im totally confused how to get the 2ch and av bits joined. I running a Cambridge Audio 751BD blu ray player, that i also use for SACD's. This has multi channel analogue outputs so the player can do all the master audio decoding for blu ray and DVD's.

Anyway with that in mind whats the best way to get into Naim amplification. Ive read about the AV2 but can this be fed with the analogue outputs from the cambridge. Would presume the NDX would then connect to this via the Din cable. Does the AV2 come with the Nap v175 or is that a separate item all together.

Also if using analogue outputs from the Cambridge, im presuming then that it does not matter about the AV2's decoding short comings. ie it will just pass the HD audio through.

Or maybe there is a much better way to do it

Any advice would be really appreciated.

That's the FAQ for how to integrate Stereo & AV.  I wrote it originally to help those who seem to have trouble doing it.  I would also suggest downloading the AV2 manual from the main Naim website (it's under OLD MANUALS, IIRC)

I have (and love) the AV2, but admit that it does have two shortcomings i.e. lack of HDMI connections and no HD audio codec decoding,  but then I let my Oppo Bluray do that for me and use the analogue inputs on the AV2 for HD audio on bluray discs.

Hi Dungassin

Have been looking at the manuals for the AV2, which kinda made me think of a way to replace the arcam AVR500. But i think you've answered my question regarding getting HD audio through via analogue inputs. My Cambridge is a variant of the Oppo 95 so it should work a treat then. Many thanks and ill have a look through your link.

If you do get an AV2 and want to use it with the multichannel outputs from you bluray player you will need to configure input 1 to MULTI as described in the manual.  Good luck!!

Thanks, must say reading through the manual and your setup post it seems quite complicated, but then things always do to me paper. Hopefully the practicable bit will be easier. cheers again
