Disposing of "music from when you were young"

Posted by: Disposable hero on 01 November 2012

This is partly inspired by the Remember when you were young thread, however a bit of a twist since it requires throwing away your old music. As I keep mentioning in other posts, I'm running my first ever Naim and in the process rediscovering past music albums that were otherwise shoeboxed over the last decade. To my own surprise and sorrow, there are some artists and music, that upon loading up and playing back their albums, I just felt not in any way involved at all. At the time of my youth these bands and their music were powerful and energising, now after 10 years it feels tedious, crude and a bit embarrassing to listen to and requires fast-forwarding or track skipping right to the end. There is even a Tesco bag on the floor for chucking these albums in to for their swifty dispatch off to Oxfam Music shops (prefer to go to charity than to try and sell). By the time I've gone through all CDs it will be something like one third is now unbearable, another one third is keepable but to remain shoeboxed, and the other third that was in the regular circulation case already. Is this just one of those things that comes with age?

Times and attitudes change and youth becomes maturity and old age.

It is inevitable that musical taste changes. Nothing wrong with that.

I believe it is quite right to discard what you might once have enjoyed but no longer do, and probably never will again, rather than keep it simply to willy-wave in the "how many LPs do you have but probably have never listened to more than once" contests.

Some dodgy 80's-90's rock/metal including W.A.S.P, Dinosaur Jr., Zodiac Mindwarp and the fittingly titled Ned's Atomic Dustbin. Did you want any of this its gone to Oxfam now.

Neds ,,which oxfam shop has that gone to? God Fodder by any chance?

to be fair apart from "kill your televison" an indie disco floor filler if their ever was one,  little else has stood the test of time from neds. again a great live band

I have to admit to a bit of a goth phase ,, sisters of mercy , all about eve ,, the mission etc all of which i wouldnt listen to now, just sound a bit naff.  , Bauhaus on the other hand still get regular plays . more of an arty mildly pretentious band who were  labeled  the origional goth band but to me still listenable ,

> All About Eve

Excellent band - I bought their albums from the king of Welsh goths: Dai Young.

Bauhaus

Well it goes without saying that everybody likes Bauhaus ... I think that is one group folk on this forum all agree are beyond criticism. Whereas every other group attract positive and negative comments, with Bauhaus, everybody just says they are fantastic. Me, I was brought up on Bauhaus and black bedroom walls.

I had some Dire Straits records I dumped on an ex-forum member, he seemed quite pleased with them and I knew I'd never play them ... so we both won out. Still he was a good lad was Wilf, 'cos like me, he was in to Placebo and Craddle of Filth.

Another forum member has my entire collection of Finnish punk rock albums. Mind you he has furnished me with many a good record in return.

I'm keeping a low profile ....
