Bose Cube Speakers

Posted by: fatcat on 01 November 2012

In the near future I'll be buying one of those newfangled flat TV's, I've resisted buying one mainly due to the poor sound quality and I'm quite happy with the picture and sound from my Sony CRT beast.

I've just bought an old Bose Acoustimass system, large subwoofer and a couple of twin cubes. I won't be using the sub, but quite like the idea of using the cubes. I don't want an A/V receiver, I'm after something smaller. Is there anything I can buy, a sound bar or similar that will enable me to utilise the cubes.

FC,

due to the closed-system nature of the Bose kit, you're best bet is to use the sats with the sub (this provides the correct low frequency cut-off and also holds the power amp) and source a secondhand Bose HES unit.  Just using the sats on their own is probably not a good idea as the cut-off provided by the sub box is very high up the frequency range.

fatcat,

As Richard inidcates the Bose system really has to be used as a complete sub/sat system and will not work any other way. I guess you are now committed to the Bose but if not there are a few more options.

The best option IMO would be to place the TV between your stereo speakers and route the sound through your main system. If this is not possible or desirable then Q Acoustics make a rather neat amp/speaker system that actually attaches to the back of your TV using the mounting holes that are intended for a wall bracket. The speakers are slim and held in place on either side of the screen. Altenatively you could buy something like a Denon micro-system and some suitable speakers, which is very small and compact and sounds really very good indeed. I use mine for music and DVD sound with a pair of tiny Fujitsu Eclipse single driver speakers and it punches well above its weight IMO.

Thanks for the advise. Sounds like it's a non starter. I was hoping to utilise the cubes as I'm sure the sound quality would be better than a soundbar.

I'm not really committed to Bose, the sub and cubes only cost £15.

I'll probably get up early tomorrow and rush down to comet, although I usually like to ponder for a month or so before choosing a new TV. Pity they don't sell Q-TV2 speakers, seems a very neat idea.

I've just bought a new TV, a Loewe Art 32 DR+.

The sound quality is rather good (as is the picture quality), I had a Loewe CRT before which also had great sound, the new one isn't as good but I was surprised by the amount of bass that this thing produces considering its size, no other LCD TV I have heard is at all satisfactory but this one hits the spot for general viewing.

The set is rather pricey, just short of £2k for the one with a built in hard drive and not worth the cost in my opinion even though it is rather lovely.  But if you do an internet search for the model you will find there is an authorised dealer selling these for £749 which makes it quite a bargain.
