Toslink ports on nDAC

Posted by: Shaun McCullagh on 04 November 2012

I rather unwisely bought a secondhand nDAC from eBay recently and have now discovered TosLink ports 3 and 4 do not work, no matter how many times 'prev' & 'next' are pressed.

Has anybody come across Toslink ports 3 & 4 not working? Luckily for me 1 & 2 do work ok

Presumably the repair bill will be well over 1,000....

TIA

I don't have a NDac. But try to reset the device. Watch the manual - probably NDac allows to disable unused Inputs. I disabled all unused Inputs at my box too.

Yes, do check they haven't been disabled. I disable all digital and analogue ports which are not in use, so the previous owner may have done the same

Hi Jobseeker -

Are you thinking of the Naim network players?  AFAIK, the Naim DAC's inputs are always on, and there is no way to disable them.

Hi Shaun -

Are you also using the RCA inputs labelled 3 and 4? According to the manual...

Only one connection format (optical or coaxial) for each input may be used at any one time. However, both may be connected simultaneously and the DAC will automatically select the socket on which valid data is present. If a data stream is present on both sockets, selection can be switched between the two by pressing the relevant input button.

If you are, and toggling the input does not help, then a service might be necessary.

Good luck.

I agree with Hook, there is no way (I am aware of) of disabling inputs on the DAC.It has a very simple but usually effective control logic.

No input enable/disable facility with nDAC. You can toggle between coax and optical connections for each input, but both are always active. Sounds like a trip to Naim HQ could be in the pipeline. Doubt it will cost £1000's though.

Steven Hopkins was kind enough to send me the latest firmware which installed right first time, however the problem persists, so I'm going see if one of the Dutch dealers will have a look at it for me (I live in the Republic of Amsterdam)

Despite this I must say I am absolutely amazed with the sound through my 25 year old NAIT-3, which incidentally I bought secondhand from Basically Sound in 1991.

Thanks to all especially Steve & Basically Sound .

Great Forum

Are you using all the inputs including the Coax and BNC ?

What are you feeding them with?

What cables are you using?
