For Sale - NOT?

Posted by: Foxman50 on 04 November 2012

Being relatively new to this forum and Naim, i was just wondering why there isnt a section for people to advertise the Naim Kit they have up for sale. I can understand not wanting to turn the site into an auction ebay clone, but maybe an area to say im passing on my Naim ***** email me if interested. Or traded in at so ans so give them a call if your after one.

This has been covered many times, and I expect Richard or Adam will explain why not before long!

It is covered in the Forum Rules, which you agreed to abide by when you signed up.

You did read them, didn't you?

A refresher may be in order, they are linked to by the sticky thread in each Forum, and at https://forums.naimaudio.com/di...ent/1566878604247622

Why of course i have

However

"No Reps!
No For Sale or Wanted ads!
(includes free gifts and loans of equipment)."

Does not state why this is not allowed, hence my question

Naim invest time and money in recruiting and training authorized dealers and then rely on them to offer the best possible environment for customers to buy or sell their equipment. To open this forum to private sales would be to literally cut out the 'middle man'. In this case the 'middle man' is the very layer of the supply chain whom Naim most wish to support and who they trust to maintain a certain level of customer service and accountability I would imagine.

There are lots of other ways to buy and sell Naim but by using a Naim dealer caveat emptor need not apply.

It's the rules. I'm delighted by this rule, as it is wonderful to see a site which is not trying to sell anything.

It is also true that Naim prefers its kit to be setup by a dealer, so the preference is to buy second hand kit through a dealer. I am happy to do this - ex-dem kit is often a good buy.

The other issue is that if you bought from this site then you might think the goods were in some way sanctioned by Naim. Members are aware of some of the rubbish sold on evil bay that looks from the pictures like perfectly good Naim kit, but has been enhanced by some unauthorised person. Some that does not even exist as it has the same serial numbers as other folks kit. I'm not sure how accountable evil bay is for such things.

i think all in all it is better for the forum to steer clear of such things.

There are surely other sites that you can use to sell and buy like webuyanyamp.com or similar. I, for one will not be using such sites.

I have recently purchased two second hand or should i say previously used, always sounds better, from a well known Naim authorised dealer recently. And to be honest i would not do it any other way as im a fussy f**k and like to see what im getting for my hard earned cash.

However i will admit to looking on, as you say Mr Fawkes "evil bay", and thats what got me thinking. Surely it would be good if there was a section here to let members know they maybe parting with a piece of equipment. It would give it a provenance lets say.

Anyway it was just a question as i found it slightly odd. But i can consider myself well informed. Thanks for the replies.

Very much agree with Guido.  The introduction of a commercial aspect to the forum would change it fundamentally and, for me, for the worse.  What I find a delight is that while views on the forum vary very widely, the overwhelmingly common characteristic is the simple one of enthusiasm for music, Naim and hi-fi. Even the dealers who contribute seem to be enthusiasts first and professionals second.

Foxman,

simple really. To allow any selling would be the thin end of a very large wedge.  Every man and his dog would love to use the Naim forum to sell their wares and it would be very hard, if not impossible to distinguish a private sale from a trade shill or promotion.

On top of that, Naim could be argued to have some responsibility should a sale go bad.  As always the safest place to buy and sell secondhand Naim is through an authorised Naim dealer.

So those are the rules.  End of discussion.
