Question about NDAC

Posted by: plexxx on 05 November 2012

I have an opportunity to pickup a used NDAC but need to clarify a few points about some of its abilities.

I see that it supports ipod input via USB.  How exactly does that work?  Can I play files over the iPod interface and it is sent via USB to the NDAC?  Can I play FLAC files from the iPod through NDAC?  Apple doesn't support FLAC so I'm not sure if this would work...

Does NDAC support firmware upgrades?  I've owned devices before that stop supporting newer revision apple devices.

Hi,  you plug your IPod USB into the NDAC, and the audio plays through your NDAC from the Ipod / Iphone music player.

As you are using the NDAC as opposed to the Ipod's internal DAC in this setup you are still limited to play what the Ipod can natively play from its music player - so no FLACs from the Ipod music player. When you insert the USB into the NDAC the Ipod music player starts straightaway so I am not sure how you could get another audio app to play instead - but I haven't fiddled around much.

The NDAC does support firmware updates - via the USB - very straightforward - but are differnent (perhaps obviously) from the Network player firmware updates. There has only been one firmware update I am aware of.

The DAC works with the iPhone 4S.

Any app you start with audio output will be sent to the ndac. I have not tried spotify but I use it with an App both for Danish public radio and tv, one is an app and the other one streamed with Safari.

You should be able to play FLAC from any iOS device using FLAC Player or GoldenEar apps
