Nstream playlist help

Posted by: latecomer on 08 November 2012

Hi guys, I have a few playlists saved on my nstream app, and all is good there until....

One of the disks on my NAS died and I had to reformat my hdd and restore my music library from a backup. A bit of a hassle but no lasting damage done.

However when I load up my playlist on my nstream now, it says "some tracks are unavailable as they cannot be located on the server or the server is offline".  Not sure why it says that, cause I put all my music back into the "Music" folder like it was before. Any advice on how I can get it to work again?

I think I can explain what has happened, although unfortunately I don't know how to fix this. nStream remembers the uPnP index entries in its playlist. These index entries are the uPnP servers shorthand for which music file you want, and are usually returned when you browse or search the library. A bit like this...

You browse the library, Artist -> Album -> Track and arrive at say, Kate Bush -> Lionheart -> Wow, and press play. The controller (nStream) gets the index entry from the server and tells the streamer to play e.g. http://server/aaa/bbb/ccc.wav (or something that looks a bit like this) - this is its internal index entry for the right track, but is not the same as the files real location on the NAS.

All is well as long as you always browse the server and it will always return the right index. The problem occurs when you force a complete rescan of the music files as there is no guarantee that it will build its index in exactly the same way. When you lost a disk and restored it will have had to do a complete index rebuild.

nStream's playlists will still contain the old index entries which are no longer guaranted to be correct, so in some cases it can't find the right file to play.

i think this is what is happening - no idea how to fix though... Perhaps Naim or someone with a bigger brain than mine can suggest something?

Dave, you are correct, and there is no way to fix it. If the upnp server creates a new index with different values then you have lost your playlists, or at least the media referenced by the new index values. The answer would appear to be with the upnp to use a more deterministic/predictable value for the index, so if it is rebuilt it has the same value as before.

Gents I'm experiencing the exact same thing. I add a track to a playlist via n-Stream on my iPad. I then come back a day later and pull up the very same playlist on n-Stream and I get the error message ‘Some tracks are unavailable as they cannot be located on the server or the server is offline’ This occurs about 80% of the time I access a playlist. It often happens on more than one playlist at the same time. Of course the tracks are there on the system in the very same place they were when I added the tracks to the playlist. I can seek out, find and play these ‘missing’ tracks.

However, I’ve done nothing to the system. No media additions, no deletions, no maintenance, no equipment failure, no power cycle of anything in the network or system etc. The system consists of Userve SSD, NAS, 172 and all have been powered up the entire time. So the UnitiServe system is loosing these tracks all by itself without any outside interference. Any idea why the naim system just spontaneously looses songs from playlists? Is this yet another example of less than stable naim UnitiServe software?
