Xmas - worst time to buy music

Posted by: Cbr600 on 09 November 2012

Does everyone find that the weeks coming up to xmas are the worst, when it comes to buying new music.

It appears that every record label suddenly starts issued compilation albums, remastered, re release versions, etc.

Clearly based on commercial benefit to get us to pay out for music that we do not need and that is of a very poor standard.

It does not bother me one jot.

I don't buy that stuff.

The only thing Christmas does is slow up the post a bit more than normal.

Hi Cbr600

+1

The only thing I like about this time of year when buying music is the fact that most of the record shops I frequent are very busy and I kinda like seeing that. It does make me laugh when I see all these compilations and remasters, the record companies must think we are stupid, now where did I put my "now thats what I call music 100" again.

+ 1 with Stu. Also why does Christmas have to start in October? Oh and while I am on the subject what is it with all these ‘celebrity’ books!

Can't disagree with you, but I know what I like, just need to sort the wheat and all that..

+2. I don't bother with all that crap. I know what I want. There is one positive at Xmas and that is I can suggest LPs as presents.

The whole of Christmas is based on commercial benefit, from mince pies to sexy underwear.

In terms of the music available then it is totally subjective - your very poor standard definition and something that is not needed may not apply to a fan of that music.  For sure the remaster/reissue/repackage market will be to generate profit based on commercial benefit - but then what isn't in this world? Was there no profit margin on your hi-fi?

Also if you just wanted to give a gift to somebody special and a remaster/reissue/repackage did suit them, that is one gift sorted. Take for example a hypothetical scenario, for a random man, woman or yourself - say there was a dotty old aunt that you hardly ever see and that lives alone in a cottage in the wilderness. She has always been a massive Bobby Darin fan. If you were to post her some remaster/reissue/repackage Darian compilation it may just fill her otherwise lonely christmas day with joy, she might even forget her maj' the Queen's speech for waltzing around the house instead, reminiscing the old times when Darin and her was still youthful figures.

Or, if you had some teenage nephew or niece that never thought much of you, for Christmas if you send them the latest deluxe reissue of their trendy youth Tiny Tempur or Jessy Jay, nowadays these CDs have their interactive content via web browsers and they may well be impressed with your choice of gift for them. Then they will see you as that cool uncle/aunt that is so down with it.

I'm not big on Christmas myself but you only have to lighten up, give some bad music to make someone elses christmas a bit brighter and to heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race

I wish it could be Christmas every day ... and here is the best Christmas song I have ever heard.

I hear what you say. My problem is that I like to buy lots of music, and often go out to get the latest album from artists I know. I then appear to be bombarded with many items to buy, and when bought they very often disappoint.

Maybe it's simply my problem and I need to be more patient / selective

Take your time, do your background reading (if required) and listen before you buy via Spotify for example. It's easy to buy everything you see if your have disposable income, but there's little point in a music collection you don't enjoy and isn’t representative of yourself.

Karl, unless I'm mistaken, spotify is not available in ireland, unless someone knows how I can get it, or an alternative?

If young Ritchie can enjoy Christmas then so can we all -

Let's celebrate, 'cos I'm feeling great

Kate Rusby has a new record out, the Unthanks have a new record out .... it is a great time to be alive ...

Is that Richie Blackmore from rainbow ( old days)?

Not the image I would have expected unless his music has changed?

Posted on: 09 November 2012 by Guido Fawkes

Yes ... the Ritchie Blackmore from Rainbow and Deep Purple

He and his wife Candice Night formed the outstanding Blackmore's Night -it is a blend of traditional music and Blackmorian music ... I think it is fantastic. Even the Lord said so (he of Concerto for Group and Orchestra).

I have an Amazon wish list with around 400+ items on. That includes books, DVDs and miscellaneous other stuff. It is added to constantly and subtracted from similarly as people buy me stuff. Sometimes, I even buy me stuff. It is unaffected by seasonal considerations unless someone suggests a good Christmas album. This year - Tracey Thorn.

In this time of sharing,  let's remind ourselves that SyCo need your help. There are several "artits" who did  not make in time for Xmas. Please have a heart and help those not in need to waste a few more pounds of yours. After all, that's what Xmas is all about. Please buy generously!

All the Christmas commercialism gets right up my pipe. Perhaps the new AoC will get the heathen masses whipped into shape with some stern preaching.

I'm not looking forward to it, but if he's busy and can persuade Candice to pop round and whip me into shape ..............

I am so looking forward to putting my New bought last year black tree back up this year.

Its been in its box in front of the chest of draws in my bedroom since i took it down in Jan this year.

I never got around to putting it in the shed because it would take hours to re-arange the empty naim boxes.

I am looking forward to Christmas this year for the first time in years.

I am out this weekend to get a new tree and ornaments as part of the process of starting a new, fun phase in my life.  Leaving "Bah - Humbug" in the loft along with all the old stuff.
