Massive Attacks 'Blue Lines' Remastered for Vinyl and 24bit!

Posted by: Paul@HiFi Lounge on 10 November 2012

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere but as a Massive Attack fan it is great news that they are remastering and re-releasing their Classic album 'Blue Lines' with Vinyl, Cd and 24bit versions available from 19th Novemeber, shame the deluxe boxset is £55 as getting the Vinyl and 24bit in one package is exactly what I think more record companies should embrace to help drive sales up again.

What I'm most excited about though is the prospect of them giving the same treatment to Mezzanine, one of my most used demo albums of all time when demoing new kit, especially 'Teardrop'.

Here's a little more info -

The 2012 Remix/Master will be available on single CD format, standard and high resolution digital downloads and as a Deluxe Box.

The Deluxe Box will contain the CD, DVD with 96K/24 bit high resolution audio files, the album split over two 180g vinyl LPs and the original 24"x18" Blue Lines promo poster. Both packaged in 5" and 12" card mailers, respectively, with the album's artwork screen-printed per the original release.

Can all be ordered from here -

Got the original of Blue Lines out the other night and it was just lovely. Great songs with a great sound. Can't imagine a remaster is going to improve that. But yes, Mezzanine. Must get that out soon.

Paul,

If you think the remaster vinyl sounds better than the original?

Shut up shop now and cut your losses.

Was having a Massive Attack day on Sunday, went through Blue Lines, Mezzanine and Heligoland on vinyl. As others have said, it's pretty hard to imagine any remaster of these albums sounding better than the original editions; they're fantastic recordings. Angel on Mezzanine is incredible when played with a bit of extra volume

I missed Mezzanine on vinyl when originally released so I thought I'd just do a quick search and see if I could pick up a copy, Amazon have 2nd hand copies for £105 and £179 with Heligoland going for a cool £100, all of a sudden the £55 remastered edition of Blue Lines with 24bit dvd doesn't sound that expensive after all

The vinyl packaging on Heligoland is pretty amazing. But you're right, those prices are insane.

Just downloaded the 24/96 Wav version - Needed to amend the tags & add album artwork via Media Monkey (Annoying that you always seem to have to do this with high res downloads not purchased from dedicated sites)

Will listen tomorrow vs. UServe Rip of Collected to see if there is any difference (Original cd copy of Blue Lines was destroyed in my uni days )

Very interested in other people's comparison with the original.

Keep us posted Prubast, be really interesting in your findings, I keep looking at the Deluxe Version as I'd love the vinyl.

Also interested in Media Monkey that you mention as I've never heard of that and I've got quite a bit of music that isn't tagged correctly, this could be a real god send, thanks for the heads up, downloading the free version as we speak

Hi there,

I'm just spinning a CD of the Massive Attack's album in question. Hmmmm... first thing that striked me is the quantity of compression. It was expected, but not to that extend though. For listening in the car would be perfect:-) There is added a kind of clerity and depth to the new re-issue but generally to my ears and in my current system the verdict is that the original version is much much better.

Cheers!

Paul - busy day at work so will report back after I have had a chance to listen tomorrow.

In the meantime here is a link to a previous thread I started where a fellow forum member endlessnessism provides a brilliant guide to using Media Monkey to tag your downloads. Hope this gets you started (It's the long post about halfway down the thread)

I've just had a listen to one of the new 24/96 tracks. On the whole I think it's a better mix/master. It definitely sounds a bit richer and borders on being a little too big in the bass on my system but aside from that it sounds really good to my ears. I've played the new version vs the old 16/44 I have and I think the hi-res is a tad more open and just seems to reach deeper into the music. I'm not 100% sure of my own opinion at this stage though... I'll run through the whole album when I get a chance. I think this is the trouble with hi-res... as far as I have experienced so far it's not a night and day difference. Most people will struggle to hear it I suspect. I like the idea on principal... that is to give you self the biggest window at the very beginning. The audible benefits I'm still a tad unsure of. Anyone else had a listen?

HD WAV or FLAC  ???

I can't decide.

Thats a good question, I wonder if the Flac is compressed at all? when I rip my own cd's I use compression level 5 but today I had a couple of guys in and we compared the same song in WAV ripped on my HDX v Flac ripped with dBpoweramp all through the NDS and we all agreed that WAV had more body, weight and overall presence, which was a bit of an eye opener, as that is the first time I've tried that little test, very interesting, looks like Naim were right going with Wav though.
