The first cd you ever bought

Posted by: Mike Hughes on 10 November 2012

We're very good on the last cd we bought but what was the first and why?

I thought mine was Swing The Statue by Victoria Williams but now I've applied my mind to it I suspect it was Green by R.E.M.  That was then of course the last vinyl record I bought.

So, that was yours and why?

Wanted the album at the time circa. 1985 and saw it on offer whilst shopping in Koln (we lived in West Germany for a few years). Still to buy my first CD player at the time (which was a Meridian MCD).

A great album from the early '80's which we should play more often.

I think mine was "Hysteria" by Def Lepard.

I am ashamed to admit that my first CD purchase was Bridge of Spies by T'Pau.  My excuses are that at the time I liked the single China in your Hand  and I had just bought my first CD player - a Phillips job from Laskys - and I was in a hurry to get something to play on it.  There, after all those years I've confessed! And, yes, the CD is still crap.

To be honest i don't remember now.

Do a search?

This question has come up so many times  on here over the years.

I got a few free with my first ever CDP and already had a load of freebies.

I would rather talk about plumbing or shit.

Going to CD from vinyl is the only and biggest regret of my life.

The first CD I bought was Vienna - Ultravox. Purchased at the Sony centre in Basingstoke in 1983 still play it today.

I agree with Stu.

CDs are the devils spawn.

At least I had the sense not to sell my record collection.

Bought my my ex-wife. Now you know why I tend to listen to vinyl. Mind you, they were not as half-bad live. Bless her!

This, in early 1986. It was the first non-classical album to be released on CD only (although there was a limited edition Japanese double-LP set released later). I didn't have a CD player at the time (I didn't buy one until 1991) so I taped it from my brother in law's Trio CDP.

It's not actually a very good album bt I bought it nonetheless because I collected everything on Factory Records (this was FACD 144).

I can definately remember my first vinyl album "Anthem" by Toyah, still got it and it still has the £3.99 Boots price sticker on it!

I didn't actually say why did I. Oops. Bought both albums on cd as I'd been playing them to death on vinyl and was very familiar with them. Seemed a good idea to start with something where I could make a comparison. Poor one as it happened in as much my system for vinyl reproduction could be politely be described as poor at the time so it was always going to be an unfair comparison. Very easy to regret the move to cd but equally easy to forget the many plusses. 1) Remote control. 2) The massive glut of re-releases that would not otherwise have seen the light of day. 3) The space saving. 4) Affordability of decent players in comparison to turntables. 5) Fill in your own...

"Dummy" by Portishead. Recommended by a friend, started a love of TripHop still going today.

After a break from music buying - switching from vinyl to cd was also at the same time as starting to listen to more electronic music. So haven't missed vinyl at all - don't need the "warmth". Prefer my cd Kraftwerk to vinyl Kraftwerk...

Always used to bug me when an lp was in less than perfect condition and the scratches, hiss etc was audible . Though ironically enough, one of my favourite bands - Pole - often use a noise not to dissimilar to tape/vinyl hiss !

My first CD was the Philips issue of the two Dvorak Serenades - for Strings and Wind Band - played by the ASMF under Neville Marriner. That was in 1986, and it still plays without a single fault.

I was delighted to ditch LPs, which for me represent that disaster between 78s and the obviously better CD.

Of course it is horses for courses, but LPs rarely cut the mustard for classical music with its huge demands on dynamic and accuracy - something that LPs never majored on in the genre. At its best LPs are about as good as CDs on solo acoustic instruments like the classical guitar, but they deteriorate, and the surface noise gets worse each time they are handled, and it is sad that one's favourite records on vinyl needed regular replacement to remain enjoyable.

Stu,

We all make mistakes in life, I know I've made a few, but the main thing is you're happy now. There's nothing like the love of a good woman to make things right and children keep you young, in heart at least.

Enjoy your helicopter trip. See you next Saturday.

I think it was The Best of REM ... can't really remember though ... I do remember buying No Frontiers by Mary Black after hearing her on a sampler album attached to hi-fi magazine.

Mine was "Irish Folk Favourites" a 4cd box set.

I bought it because I had just bought a cd player, I liked Irish Folk and it was cheap. Still have it and still listen to it. The Kilfenora Ceili Band are superb...

1985. To play on a Philips CD104! Oh dear!!

Posted on: 11 November 2012 by Ghettoyout

My first CD player was also a Yamaha (Natural Sound CDX-860). The first CD itself was a Velvet Underground compilation that included the wonderful Sweet Jane and Lisa Says.

Or was it Fairport Convention (Liege and Lief)?
