n-Stream, Asset UPNP and Playlists
Posted by: mipi on 11 November 2012
I am running Asset via Crossover on a Mac Mini (which works quite well). Recently I upgraded vom n-Stream 3.13 to 3.17. So now I have the playlist support available in n-Stream. But where does n-Stream store the playlists? I have a dedicated directory where I store my playlists (I used to create playlists under Win7 with Playlist Creator and store them in the dedicated directory which works well with Asset), but the lists created with n-Stream don't appear there. Any ideas?
Thanks, mipi
Hi Nstream stores the playlists on the iPad / iPhone / iPod itself. If you connect the the device to iTunes and look at file sharing under the Nstream app you will the see playlist files.
These files XML files and contain a sequence of media and album art references on your upnp server.
When you select the playlist on Nstream to be played, Nstream will load that list into the network player, and the player will commence the playout of that media.
If the Nstream can't find the media at its playlist stored reference of the media which is the upnp index and the upnp server address (note this is not neccessarily the same as the NAS) then a little red cross is shown by the media item and it will not be possible to use it in the playlist.
Therefore Nstream playlists have nowrelationship to stored playlists on your upnp server/NAS.

Thanks, Simon, got it.
Another question: Is it possible to play the tracks of a (n-Stream) playlist in random order?
Thanks, mipi
Yes you can, load your playlist into your network player and them ensure the random button is selected (to the right of the repeat button on Nstream) and the selection will randomly progress through your playlist as indicated by the little green marker against the media in the playlist screen,

Hi Simon,
I found that this (random play of playlists stored on the server) only works with compatibility mode switched on, but then I have no playlist support in n-Stream. If the compatibility mode is switched off then the playback of a server playlist stops after the first song if random play is switched on. Can you confirm this behaviour?
Thanks, mipi

I suspect that you are going into the playlist and pressing play on a track - in which case it is playing the track - go to your list of playlists and touch-and-hold the playlist that you want to play then choose "Play" from the drop down context menu, this will play the entire playlist and if you have "random" turned on it will play it in a random order.

Hi mipi, yes follow Phil's suggestion, ie ensure you have selected a playlist not an individual file and therefore there are Mutiple files in the 'play queue' screen.
Simon
Thanks, guys. That solved my problem.

Is there an easy way of creating an ALL TRACKS playlist? I've updated my Qute to 3.17, but I can't see a way to just play all tracks at random. It looks like I'd have to add the tracks one album at a time - I've currently got 625 so that would take forever.
Thanks

You can "only" have 250 tracks in a playlist anyway but if you touch and hold albums and then select "Play" from the context menu then that will automatically add the first 250 tracks of your collection to the playlist and if you have "random" selected play them in a random order...
