NDS and stored music

Could I justify the NDS playing AIFF rips from the Mac Mini external HDD (Lacie)?
Not sure if I`m willing to take the UServe cost right now.
Both NDS and Mini connected to the network.
Thanks S
As it happens, the HDX has seen a couple of revivals as a source component in my system because the NDS has been back to the factory. It's doing these duties at the moment and although it's obviously inferior, its still hugely enjoyable and will do just fine in the short term.
So presumably, you can use the NDS's 555PS to run the HDX until the NDS returns? That should provide a very reasonable analogue sound source (in fact, exactly what I was using before the NDX & NDS arrived on scene !)
That would be the obvious and sensible thing to do. So of course I'm running it bare! It's been very interesting both in terms of what it can do in the musical satisfaction department and what it lacks. If the HDX was the only alternative I think I would be very happy for the performance at the price point. I'm not 100% certain the Burndy would fit. It probably will, but I'm having a good time without it. I'm also kind of half seriously (but not really) acquainting myself with how the system might sound for an extended period if the NDS goes wrong for a third time, although admittedly I probably would run an HDX with a 555PS. Much though I adore the NDS's presentation and ability, I'm beginning to have a tiny doubt about its long term viability. I can easily forgive it for these peripheral inconveniences, but should I? I expect when it's all back in, warmed up and singing its heart out again I will forget about the problems, none of which have affected the exquisite music that flows out of it.
Harry I'm really sorry to hear of your woes. Other than a couple of re-starts, I've not had to touch my NDS. What's been going wrong?
First time out it was a screen issue Bart. This time it's screen backlight and freezing control buttons. Neither vital and both almost certainly a case of Naim being at the mercy of outside suppliers - and we know they are rigorous in selection. To sum up, just bad luck. And preferable to a dead unit. But however minor and inconsequential, it would put some off and it has caused me to pause, even if only slightly.
Like I said, when the music is flowing again I'll likely soon forget.
Thanks to all for this discussion from many points of view.
I also downloaded the PDFs on the UServe and overwhelmed with info, but the elegance and reliability of NAIM has won me over.
Tho I'm going to hire a local Mac tech to sort out my Synology problems of duplicate copies, etc, I'll use it also for back up. The shear pleasure of using the interface to download and stream many types of files is the clincher.
There is a certain pleasure of buying a luxury item for oneself knowing the years of pleasure it will give.
Good choice. The Serve is an excellent piece of equipment: it provides a great sound and is really easy to use. Do get the linear power supply though.
A comment by my dealer few months back was to not continually load and rip CDs because it might cause problems with the mechanism. Is this correct? I can actually only do it for short periods then get onto something else and back later on. Any other info on ripping?
I ripped 2,000 CDs over the course of three months and the Serve lived to tell the tale. Your dealer is talking rhubarb.
It does seem like an odd comment. I've had over 1000 CDs through my HDX.
Remember that the ns01 is designed specifically for the seemingly defunct NaimNet, whereas the prime porpoise of the Serve is as a streaming source. It's also virtually silent in operation, so can sit on the Hifi rack. Some say that's not optimal but it works for me. The NS01, on the other hand, contains a large fan and is designed to live in a cupboard. It may be as silent as can be, but on the other hand.....
I know Naim also see the ns models in this way, and before upnp was added it was true, but you still hav both analog and digital out, like the hdx.
So basically the ns01 is an hdx with a dac of lower quality, and maybe maybe not as good a digital out as the hdx, but noone really seems sure on this point.
Finally it is not psu upgradeable.
For the Price of an hdx you can get the ns01 plus a dac, wich I am sure is a better combination. For me with a xps2 it was the obvious solution.
The fan is the same as in the hdx, however the case temperature is lower because of the lack of a touch screen. I have never heard my fan in operation. Finally the Userve is said to have noisy internal disk, but the ns01 disks are quiet, unless you hplace your ears close to the case.
People has different sensitivity towards noise, but I am blind so lack of noise matters for me.

OK thanks guys, actually I've been in ripping overload at times in the past, not fun. I'll take it slower anyway and after 20 or so, start listening to them instead of bingeing. Plus get out for a walk, garden, balance my retired life.
I've been away from the forum a long time and new to this digital format. It was so much easier when i sung the CDX drawer out and inserted CD. My 60yo brain is loosing more gray matter than gaining. Been reading some of the technical posts and it's waaaay over my head.
Just had a delivery of 6 180g LPs so rest of today will be vinyl, something I'm familiar with. Yehaa!
