50 + inch tv
Posted by: fathings cat on 15 November 2012
I keep contemplating a new tv to replace my 4year old 42inch Samsung plasma. Anyone done any research to what is good bang for buck? Thinking 50+ inch but not sure brand(is it still Panasonic or Samsung that rule) is plasma still the best (no idea where LCD fits in)?
Any guidance appreciated
Gary
Hi Gary. For domestic reasons I recently went from a projector system to a Panasonic 65" plasma display (a TX-P65VT50B. Nice snappy names...)
I did consider other options, such as some of the Samsung and Sony offerings, and TBH I bought the Panasonic on the strength of reviews and my positive experience with other Panasonic displays I've owned.
Anyway, I'm very impressed with it; the contrast is particularly impressive and the blacks are, well, completely black. Highly recommended, and despite not being interested in 3D, it does seem to work well on this TV.
I've just ordered the panasonic 50GT50 its a decent price 3d and a smart Tv also two free pairs of glasses. Its the best I've seen picture wise by some margin.
I thought plasma was old hat now?
Seem to recall there were issues with loss of plasma after a few years?
I thought the latest trend was LCD?
Problem with telly market is the rapid changing specs, it appears that the latest telly is out of date within 3 months
On this basis, it's probably best not to buy the latest and greatest item, as you will pay top dollar and price will drop in a few months. Better to buy lesser price models that are only a few months old from their aunch

So why would leading manufactures still be producing them if so?

different folks, different strokes !!
Why do people still produce s*it hifi systems for 50 quid?
because it suits some people (doesn't make them a good system)
The latest crop of LCD/LED TVs are very good indeed, but when it comes to the larger panels, plasma still has the edge. It has a better contrast performance and the bigger LCDs tend to show some uneven-ness in their light distribution. Plasmas tend to consume more power though.
+1
Our 50" Panasonic looks wonderful in HD (the picture that is!) and I'm please with the investment.
And yes they do consume rather a lot of power !

I've spent a lot of time looking at screens and have looked at an awful lot and IMO at present the panasonic plasmas are by far the best. There also well priced the GT50 I'm getting can be gotten online for around £1100 which for a well specced multi award winning Tv is very reasonable IMO.
Thanks for your help, off to John Lewis for a look. Their prices plus 5 year warranty look good value
