UnitiQute: Still best VFM Naim streamer?

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 17 November 2012

Even if I just use the UnitiQute as a streamer into a Naim Dac, it still appears to be the best VFM, no? I'm not sure whether the nd5xs/ndx are going to be that much better when it comes to pure streaming..

Indeed it is no wonder that Qute sell like hotcakes in some markets at price of £1000, seems like a bargain. Here those are sold at 1950€ (£1560).

UnitiLite, if you need it for more than JUST a streamer, seems to offer way more VFM -- 50 vs 30 watts, and a cd player, for $500 more at US retail prices.  I'm thinking of the Lite for my second system.

I would say so too, that's why I got 3 of them

The Qute on its own is a wonderful piece of kit. I owned one for a while (24/96) before trading up to a SU which I regretted. While a little limited in power with my low sensitivity speakers, there is something endearing about its overall presentation which to my ears is 'just right' and absolutely musical. I now own a ND5XS which is an undoubtedly better source but I still miss the little Qute.

j22: I am curious--do you still have the Superuniti?  If so, are you feeding it from the ND5XS and if so, does that improve your impression of it?  Or are you feeding the ND5XS into other gear?

Best regards,

Russ

Russ, no I no longer have the superuniti. Am using the ND5XS with non-Naim gear, and unfortunately never got the chance to test the ND5XS into SU setup. I didn't consider the pairing at the time as it didn't seem cost effective as you can get 202/200 for just slightly more.

So is the tentative answer to OP question:  the ND5XS is a better streamer into nDAC than the UQ into nDAC and is better VFM AS A STREAMER.  The UQ may be best VFM as one box hifi, but not if used only as streamer (wasting its amp). The ND5XS costs more but is proportionately better SQ as streamer.

Yes?  Or not?

(I have not heard the ND5XS.  I'm just trying to help OP get an answer to his question).

Cheers!

I haven’t done a comparison but I doubt that either the NDX or ND5XS when used with the nDac is that much better than the UQ into the nDac.

Has anyone done a comparison?
