Bob Dylan on CD

Posted by: Sloop John B on 17 November 2012

Most of my Dylan are the first Colunbia/ Sony remasters.

are the 2003 - 5 remasters significantly better?

Recently a fellow forumite visited and during an interesting evening of music the mid noughties remasters were mentioned and I have to admit they totally bypassed me, so am I missing definitive CD remasters of Dylan?

Search for The Original Mono Box Set ... I have these and they are pretty good ... Not sure they are better than my original vinyl .. but i was missing a few titles so went for this collection

Neil young stated at his last appearance on the David letterman show, that he is digitally remastering the original Dylan master tapes from the 60ies for his new high res shop which will be used to download content for his high res iPod called 'Pono' So I will wait until next year... Ps. The sacd versions (cd layer) are sounding better than the old CBS CDs IMO

The Mono Box pretty much covers it. The chances of Neil Young producing anything of Dylan for are kind of hi-res product are, in my opinion, nil. Wasting your time waiting for that.

Either that or we will be waiting a long long time for them to come out ala archives

I'm a bit wary of mono after the Beatles mono as bar the few early ones I prefer the stereo. I can appreciate that the early Dylan are probably better in mono but the first 3 Dylan I would upgrade would be Highway 61, Blonde OB and Blood OTT.

What seems to be available at the moment are 2006 remasters but from the price I'm presuming they are not the sacd dual layer ones.

will we all have a pono player in a few years time?

My hope is that you can use the tracks from the pono shop on other devices, for example the Hdx

SJB, MoFi are releasing a few Dylans these days. The ones you like are not out yet, but who knows, they might be coming.

But there is only one Bob Dylan

The three you are after are my favourite Dylan albums

I have to agree re: those three albums being faves. However, I'd also say that 2 of them are an absolute revelation in mono. You simply haven't lived until you've heard Like A Rolling Stone in mono. It's like an entirely different song, in a good way. Dylan, possibly more than The Beatles, harnessed mono to some real powerful effect. I have stereo of the later Beatles stuff as well as the mono set. It's interesting to hear the differences but, as I have original Beatles vinyl passed down to me, I'd have to say the mono are far truer to those by some distance.

I have the MOFI 45rpm 'Freewheelin' and the quality was a big surprise for me, considering my experiences with some of their other reissues. My copy is stereo though. I think the mono box set is probably your best bet for mono cd.

A probable language issue on my part Steve, but I don't get what you mean. Did you like the MoFi 'Freewheelin' ? And what did you think of their other recent reissues ?

Posted last night that in the new Music Direct catalogue the following Dylan titles are due out this year.

Greatest Hits, Desire, Before the Flood, Nashville Skyline, Highway 61, John Wesley Harding, Bob Dylan.

No release dates yet though.

Yes, I liked the recent 'Freewheelin' 45rpm. It's the first MOFI LP I've bought for a while as previous ones have been disappointing.
