UQ questions.

Posted by: Aidan1 on 24 November 2012

Hi Folks,

I've finally taken the plunge and bought a Naim UQ due to collect on Monday.

Have been looking for a while after selling my Musical Fidelity A5 CDP/amp.

I was blown away in the audition at my dealer & can't wait to get it.

Got a few questions though.

1. Have started ripping my cd's with XLD, do I just drop the extracted wav files into my shared music folder in on my NAS, and the will n-Stream view these files & folders the way make my music folders? Or do I have to make up new playlists?

2. The dealer told my to put Eyeconnect on my Macbook which I have done, so can I use my Mac to stream directly (as an alternative option), if so, how do I go about it doing that.

Hope that makes sense.

Anyways, can't wait to get my shiny new box.

p.s. My speakers are B&W Nautilus 805's, are these regarded as a suitable pairing for the UQ, my demo at the dealers was with Dynaudio's.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

Just wanted to say thanks for advice, and ask, Aidan have you got it yet, and what are your thoughts?

Hi Justin.

Not got it yet. Its been two weeks now, have been on the phone to the dealer today.

He said, Naim had had Quality Trouble with a component & wouldn't despatch until the problem was sorted out. Don't know if this is just an excuse or genuine problem, its re-assuring if the later & disappointing if the former.

Anyways, hes going to ring me with a definite day for next week on Monday, suppose its out of his control, but communication could have been better.

Managed to get some free optical & spdif cables thrown in, so i can rig my t.v. up & hook up my Macbook direct, I said it would keep me happy & he agreed.

Anyways, will keep you posted.

My B&W Nautilus speakers are lonely, even re-terminated my Chord Odyssey bi-wire cable.....ready & waiting.

Cheers.

Aiden ... I'm not sure the UQ will like that .... I don't think it should be used with bi-wire cable.

You may want to double check ...

Sorry, but you've waited long enough ... just didn't want this to be a problem

I'd check with Naim if I were you ... none of its speakers accept bi-wire and they definitely don't recommend it ... the usually advice is F-connectors.

All the best, Guy

Thanks for the info Guy, will look into it.

Obviously I'll terminate at the UQ end with the supplied Naim terminals.

Will go with what I've got for now at the speaker end (bi-wire) & will change if I feel I need to.
Can't see how bi-wiring can be detrimental to the output to be honest, but will keep it in mind.

I mean, I understand the whole 'to bi-wire or not to bi-wire', arguments, in terms of sonic improvement, but don't understand how it could actually be worse for the system.

But I'm open minded & obviously Naim know more about these things than me & if thats what they officially say, then I'll take it seriously

Cheers ears

Finally got my UQ from the dealer today & I'm up & running.

Sounding sublime, an upgrade from my Musical Fidelity for sure.

Mostly got cd 44.1 redbook rips so I Just got some 24/94 from hd tracks, the sound is awesome & my Nautilus 805's are singing.

Bit of tweeking about on the network at first, now Twonky seem to be fine.

The n-stream did not kick in with the new box straight away, but eventually did after I give an I.P. address to the app.

I have gone with bi-wire as it's the only speaker cable I've got a the moment (Chord Oddessy), also I'm using my own banana plugs into the Q.C. I'm know I'm not advised to, but kind of forced to do that, but the sound is just great anyways.

I'm a very happy bunny, the app is so quick & responsive, I'm on a wired (virgin hub) network 60mb,   no worries.

Just out of interest, what kind of break in time are we looking at?

Okay, on with the music.

Thanks.

Hi Folks.

Question.

If I download a 24bit 192kHz track from HDTracks, will my Unitiqute downsample it & play it at 96kHz?

Thanks.

No, But you could downsample it using dBpoweramp and no doubt other music format convertors.

You can try this out with the free Linn Xmas tracks - and assuming that your Qute (like mine) will not play 24/192.
