BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012.

Well, the shortlist is out - unusually, we're spoilt for choice this year. Who would you vote for? (Click below).

Personally, I'd go for Wiggo - winning the TDF and a Gold within a week is a pretty awesome achievement.

Wiggins for me, but what an amazing year for British sport. I still get a warm feeling when I think about the Tour de France, the Olympics, and Brands Hatch on that sunny day we had.

Careful Kevin, we could be talking balls for a long time.

The other point is that as other nominees are Olympic based, there is the question of what should be in the Olympics.

That being said, wiggo was impressive but the whole question Mark over Armstrong has tainted the cycling fraternity

+1 for Wiggo. No brainer for me. TdF plus all the other races he won in the lead up to it ... And then to follow up with Olympic Gold is pretty special. In any other year most of those nominated would be worthy winners but not this year.

Difficult...for me it comes down to these 5:

Murray wins a grand slam and gold for GB - the first time in donkeys yonks.

Wiggins achieves TDF, Olympic Gold and - more importantly in my view - nearly kills himself and his chances to help Cavendish only to see Cavendish lose it due to other teams wish to see GB lose. This team spirit shows true sporting character.

Kat Grainger - 4th time lucky!

David Weir - 4 Olympic golds, such a lovely guy, such commitment.

Ben Ainslie - the greatest sailor of all time? And he's just retired from Olympic sport...

Sorry but Rory McIlroy has been too inconsistent this year.

Overall I think I'd give it to Weir.

Regards,
Frank.
All opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinion of any organisations I work for, except where this is stated explicitly.

Your having a laugh aren't you Frank? How much does he have to do? World Number 1. Top money earner in both the US and Europe. Won another major this year. Won the Race to Dubai ............. Need I go on?

My vote still goes to Bradley Wiggins though. Winning the TdF alone should be enough but to then 10days later go and win his 4th Olympic Gold in such great fashion shows the magnificent sportsman he is.

Kevin,

Just as an aside to the actual voting, I am impressed by the posting of a voting system and howit is working.

Love to know how it's done

Well none, actually. Why should someone who plays games for a living receive and award on the basis of "personality"? In fact, on any basis whatsoever? Who cares?

Wiggo.

Apart from the two wins already mentioned, he also won a number of important races prior to the TDF this year.

+ I with you and Steve, Karl . It should be Wiggo but would not bet on it   but if not Wiggo  Sheffield's golden and the Olympic's poster girl Jess Ennis would get my vote. By the way, why do we only get one vote? What about a 2nd & 3rd choice like the beeb do.

Regards Graham.

Ditto for Wiggo

(1) Beating the French at their own sport in their own country - priceless

(2) He does actually have a personality ("time for the raffle numbers")

but mainly because

(3) Wearing the yellow jersey but still leading out Cavendish down the Champs-Elysees was absolute class

I think this is why Wiggins should win it (forgive the link):

Paul, when you start a new thread, there's an option at the bottom to "add a poll". Simples!

Well, Winky and Steve, it's called  "Sports Personality of the Year" because it used to be "Sportsman" of the year. Then someone realised that girls did sport too - and, what's more, some of them were even quite good at the sports they did. So the word "personality" was adopted instead.

And if you care so little, why go on a thread clearly flagged as being about something you don't care about, and comment about how little you care?

Too much time on your hands boys?

Careful, Martin. Remember who owns, err,  I mean 'is in joint partnership'....., with Naim

I wonder if the BBC are hoping Bradley doesn't win, given the irreverence he usually displays. If he's true to form it will be amusing but probably embarrassing for the BBC.

We'll find out during the show, the BBC's preferred nominees get a lot more air time than others.

Well yes, girls do sport very few watch it. Ever been to a women's soccer match? Without looking it up, name three professional women golfers currently on the circuit. Media coverage of women's sport is trivial.

Well women need to be included nonetheless; but it could be "Sportsperson of the Year". Or "Sporting Achiever of the Year". It makes more sense to award someone who has had the most outstanding results, or made the greatest sacrifices  or who has triumphed against the odds. But "personality"? But if enough people are interested in awarding such a thing, and it gets ratings, I guess why not?

I was answering the original question, with my reason. "I don't care because I don't think it matters." This is just as legitimate an answer as saying "Wiggo because he beat some French people". In fact, that sort of answer is a bit to "tribal" for my liking - but that's another topic.

Why are you such a cynic Winky? It's basically a programme reviewing the past year in sport and allows the public to vote on who, to them, is the most popular sportsman/woman. Nothing more, nothing less. There are also other prizes for best team, overseas personality etc and usually makes for a good evenings entertainment.

Laura Davies, Susan Petterson, Yani Tseng.
